How much formula are you feeding your LO?

Hi everyone, my DD is 3 weeks old. I tried the breastfeeding thing and after one week our pediatrician had me start supplementing an ounce after each feeding because she wasn't gaining weight. I continued to do that for another week and a half and she was just so fussy and hungry. I went to a lactation consultant and she said my DD was barely getting any milk from me per the scale and when I pumped I would get a lousy 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce, so I decided to switch to exclusive formula because BF, then a bottle them pumping was too much (no judgement, please)... My question is she is drinking 3-4 oz every 3-4 ounces. Is this normal?? What do your LO drink and how often??

  • Every 3-4 hours*

  • My LO is 3w (turning 4w Monday) he is eating 3oz. I tried the breastfeeding and due to latching issues I switched to pumping and bottle feeding and the lactation counselor said to use the supplementing formula. I try to just give him breastmilk but I only pump about 2-3oz per pump session and when he wants that extra oz in between feedings I give him 1oz of the formula.
  • My girl is 3 weeks old on Saturday and we usually give her 2 oz every 2 hours but she started drinking the 2 oz in about 4 minutes! So now we're upping it to 3-4 oz and sometimes she will finish it all sometimes she drinks half but she's still at the 2 hour timeframe. I'm hoping once she gets used to eating that much at a time she can go a little longer between feedings. We go back to the doc next week to see if she's gaining!!! (That was our problem too!)
  • I estimate that my 5 week old drinks about an ounce per hour. So 2 oz in the night when he wakes up every 2 hrs. He likes to graze when he's awake during the day. We had a similar problem (I wasn't producing enough breast milk), so on e we switched to formula, I just fed him as much as he wanted. His doc said he's fine
  • My 5 week old is drinking about 4 oz every 3 hours. We were at 3 oz for probably 2 weeks. The ped told me he should drink 2.5-3 oz per pound he weighs for the whole day. So if he weighs 10lbs that's 25-30 oz a day.
  • 2 week old, she is drinking 2-3 oz every 3-4 hours.
  • My daughter is 3 weeks old today and we feed her 4oz every three hours
  • My daughter is 3 weeks and she drinks about 4 oz every 3-4 hours. Sometimes she goes a little longer between feeds.
  • At that age my little guy was drinking that much.
  • Um.. 1 week old and at 3-4oz every 3-4 hours... But she was in the nicu getting about 3 oz when she left 2 days ago and she was on an ad lib (on demand) diet. So I'm hoping that's fine.... I mean they say to feed on demand right? Like right now it's been 4 hours and she is still sleeping... When it gets about this length in time I get nervous. But one of the stipulations of leaving nicu was gaining weight and she was doing just fine there. So this is her normal?
  • A. No judgment at ALL. You are absolutely not alone. I pumped for an hour and got less than .25 of an ounce... You're feeding your baby, hold your head up high mama!

    B. My pedi told me to shoot for 4 Oz per 4 hours. We're working our way up to that at the moment. My so is currently 2 weeks and can only manage 3 per 3. A lot has to do with your baby's size, though, so I would put in a quick call to her doc for peace of mind.
  • My LO will be 3 weeks in 2 days. He days 4-6oz every 3-4 hours in the day and 3-4oz every 4ish hours at night.
  • My has 5 or 6x 6oz bottles a day practically all hungry baby and sleeps straight thru the night.
  • My LO is 4 weeks and drinks 4 oz every 2-3 hours, sometimes a little longer if she's asleep. We felt like she might be eating too much bc she's been spitting up so we are going to give her gas drops and reduce formula to 2 oz per feeding. I think if baby is not spitting up or uncomfortable, the amount you're feeding her/him is fine. Every baby has different needs but I also read that they should eat 2.5 ounces for every pound they weigh total per day, so an 8 pound would drink 20 ounces total per day.
