Has anyone ever had issues on metformin while pregnant? (PCOS)

I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems on just met and had to take anything else during their pregnancy, or if met was all that was needed.

I am freaking out a bit, I just found out I am pregnant for the first time and had insisted I had a blood test done, because I have pcos. The nurse that called me back said I was at 340 and that I was very low (I thought I was only about 2 weeks along, but maybe I am wrong.. They couldn't tell me how far I am). I am only on Met (2000) and am taking prenatal vitamins (Have been for the 4 months ttc). They are doing another blood test Monday to see if I am doubling. Meanwhile, my hair is falling out in clumps, my temp is barley above my cover line but is staying at a flat temp, and I am really stressed out at work to top it off. Since I have found out I have tried to alter my diet and start walking every other day. With everything I know about pcos I am really worried I need progesterone supplements, but they don't seem willing to put me on anything until after I miscarry or after the blood tests show something wrong for the third time. I just hope I make it that long as I am not really having any symptoms other than hair loss. Encouragement welcome, as I am not very hopeful this will turn out well.

hello I want to make sure I am responding appropriately. Are you worried metformin is bad for you during pregnancy? I know you are taking it for PCOS but do you also have blood sugar control issues? Metformin is given out for PCOS and type 2 diabetes so I am just trying to understand if you are only on the PCOS side of things. I have been on/off metformin for 14 years. I am insulin resistant due to my PCOS and I borderline type 2 diabetes. I am almost 6 wks pregnant with #2 and was already taken off metformin and switched to insulin due to my fasting numbers being elevated. In terms of metformin, I was on it for 10 wks with my first pregnancy with no issues but was then switched to insulin. I was supposed to remain on it throughout this pregnancy (endocrinologist recommendation) but my perinatologist already took me off and switched me to insulin. 

From my understanding, metformin is safe during pregnancy and in some research it is mentioned that it could help prevent miscarriage but I think that research is specific to certain cases. If you have a history of recurrent miscarriage or fear your progesterone might be low, ask for the #'s and if your doctor is not abiding by your wishes, seek a new one. Low progesterone is such an easy concern to fix so it would be heartbreaking if that was the only cause for loss. They like to see you over 20 but anything near or under 10 needs supplementing. Anything 5 or less, is likely indication of a miscarriage but not guaranteed.

I do not know the rest of your history or situation, but it might be good to get your thyroid checked. Thyroid is known for causing fertility issues and miscarriage. It can also cause hair loss and a whole list of other issues depending on you if are hypo or hyper. I hope for your sake that they find something tangible and are able to supplement you or prescribe something to get you to where you want to be. I also hope your beta doubles nicely. Sometimes it is not the initial # that is concerning but the doubling time. Sending best wishes.

Hi I was concerned more that the Met may not be all I need. I am nervous for what it may do as well, but you helped ease my mind a little. I have never gotten my thyroid checked, but I will look into it now especially because of my hair.  I am also really hoping my doctor is competent enough to put me on a supplement if I need it, I would be so upset if that was the only thing I need and I lose this pregnancy. Thank you for the encouragement, it means a lot.
