The palate of a 6 year old

Sorry if there's a thread about this already... but I seriously have the palate of a small child right now. All I want to eat are PB&J or grilled cheese sandwiches. All of the veggies I normally love all sound gross and 95% of meat products sound disgusting. Everything needs to be bland and simple (crackers, toast, soup, apples, string cheese).

I know that this is mostly the result of MS and should fade as I stop being so nauseous all the time but part of me is starting to get concerned that I am not eating the nutrients I need for my baby. I had this idea that I was going to be able to eat even healthier when I got pregnant because I'd have more motivation to but if it's not something I would have eaten in elementary school, I want no part in it.

Re: The palate of a 6 year old

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one craving grilled cheese! My impression was embryos are great parasites, they'll pull what they need from your body and just leave you malnourished. As long as you're getting a prenatal in, anything else is good as long as you aren't losing too much weight. I may be totally wrong on this, if so someone please correct me, but I wouldn't be overly concerned.

  • Count me in for the grilled cheese bandwagon. I've had one every day this week... and that's about it. Everything @SGoldberg247 said, your baby will take what they need. Their nutritional requirements aren't much at this point, so just make sure you're taking your prenatal.

  • Ditto on the grilled cheese. My problem isn't MS, I just have no appetite. My food choices lately have been made up of grilled cheese, turkey/cheese sandwiches, string cheese, cheese & crackers, etc.

I see a cheese theme going on...
  • Same here. I'm eating foods I haven't ate in years! Since I usually eat super healthy, I'm actually gaining weight. Not cool. I had a kids meal for lunch yesterday. I would not call that a win.
Cereal for dinner. Who am I?

Like you, I just want to feed baby all the healthy stuff but this nausea is making it so hard! I promise once I start feeling better I will be eating all the veggies and lean meats.

My husband is loving this though. He eats like a kid anyway so now he doesn't have me nagging on him to eat something healthy :) I told him this baby is def. his bc it's eating all the foods he eats and doesn't want any of that healthy stuff.
  • @KOR121 I normally eat fairly healthy as well, so this is weird for me. And I also normally eat quite a bit with my workout schedule, so the lack of appetite also has me going WTF. Vegetables just sound gross right now, and I have to consciously work at eating enough protein.
  • OMG me too. Hubby bought me a Costco size assortment pack of chips and cookies and kid like snacks. I used to LOVE veggies and protein and lived the primal/paleo life until I got KU.

Also ditto as well on the grilled cheese. So good
  • @sgoldberg247 - did you just call my baby a parasite???!

LOL joking.  That made me laugh :)  Baby is def. sucking all my energy from me. So I'm not surprised he/she would do that will all my nutrients as well.  Yay prenatals.

  • @KOR121 I feel like we are the same person. Luckily I can still stomach eggs and toast, for the most part. But I would say the majority of my protein right now is coming from cheese, lunch meet and the occasional egg.

Also, that gif is spot on.
  • I am the same way! I can't stomach anything but some chicken, noodles, crackers, cheese, and the occasional ice cream bar (or nightly lol!) I am usually a fairly healthy eater. I will cook my husband what ever he wants for dinner, but I usually end up snacking around or eating what my 3 year old is eating.  Last night dinner was dry cereal and an ice cream bar... healthy right?

I haven't had any MS yet just the nausea. But I feel like my prenatals make me more nauseous.

Any recommendations on prenatals that don't have a horrible after taste? Currently taking Natures Valley regular Prenatals

  • I'm jumping on the 6yo bandwagon! Just rediscovered pb&j, toasted! It's the only thing I've eaten for 3 days. Wondering where my parasite will get the nutrients too. I also bought like 6 cans of soup, haven't done that since college, maybe ramen is next?!

Cereal @Kor121 is pretty much 2 of my 3 meals! Might start buying all the yummy sugar cereals from when I was kid, that totes has nutrients!

@MrsSchmity, lunch meat is amazing, tho I'm Always told not to eat it. Nuke that up, win:)

  • @Wyattnash00  I started buying Ramen again! It's one of the few things that doesn't make me feel sick... When I started buying it is when I started to think I was pregnant.  It was all I ate with the last pregnancy because it was all I could keep down.

Cereal is my best friend all day long.  It is usually my breakfast, snacks, and lunch

  • Yes!!! All I want is bagels, mac n cheese and fruit. I used to love veggies and coffee, now I can't stand either.

I try to at least have a salad every night before dinner to keep things moving if you know what I mean. But I had to switch from a nice Kale/cabbage mix to romaine with tomatoes and cucumbers, I still don't like it but I can at least stuff it down.
  • @Wyattnash00 totally had Cinnamon Toast Crunch for dinner. Whoops.
  • When left to my own devices all I eat currently is grilled cheese and goldfish, maybe a peach cup.

My SO started to get concerned and made all of our food for the last two days and I've discovered I can eat and enjoy salads and veggies as long as I'm not physically involved in creating the dish.

I also discovered that my bloating and constipation is wayyyyyy better when he makes food for me. As in it becomes non-existent. So now I'm really trying to avoid falling back into the cheese game. Sigh.
  • I have a confession: my breakfast this morning was mac'n'cheese with yogurt. Nothing else sounded good and normally I'd skip breakfast if the only thing that sounds good is that unhealthy. However, I needed to put something in my stomach to settle it. Oh well. I'll try to eat healthier the rest of today and tomorrow.

  • I always say I built my first baby on bread and cheese - and she is totally healthy. It gets so much better as time goes on - by four months I was eating much more normally. I was seriously concerned my baby would come out cheddar orange last time!
  • This whole thread is amazing . Grilled cheese is my new best friend - I thought I was the only one ! It's so reassuring to read these posts because I have always ate so healthy and I can't seem to stomach what I used to.
  • Oh my gosh grilled cheese sounds amazing! Most of my meals this week have been cheez-it crackers and/or soup. It's all I can manage to eat without getting sick
  • My go-to right now is noodles with a bit of butter & either shredded cheese or parmesan, lol. Definitely a kids meal option. But, after reading this thread I think I may add grilled cheese into the mix. Yum!

Sounds amazing! Might add some Frosted Flakes to that and call it a night!

  • There was a good post on Jezebel the other day about Chrissy Teigen just absolutely losing her damn mind on Twitter after people tried to pregnant-lady-shame her for eating junk cereal. Hilarious.

After four days of not eating for puking, I started Diclegis last night (praise the pharmacy gods!!!) and so far today the only things that have sounded good have been Jell-O, a Sausage McMuffin, and some peanut butter crackers. (Oh, and a pomegranate. Hey, a plant!) No shame here -- it's a hell of a lot better than eating nothing, which is where I've been stuck the past few days.

  • Mm. Sounds good. I eat like a six year old all time. Picky lady here.

  • I take it all back. This food is delicious.
  • I may or may not have made hamburger macaroni for dinner. I really just wanted mac and cheese but this way I can convince DH that this is a "proper" dinner.

  • I have an appetite & want to stuff my face...but then I get grossed out really fast & can't finish. Happened last night with quesadillas. A couple of days before with a KFC mash potato bowl. And yes, all I want to eat is junk!
  • Ah you ladies are the BEST - you made me feel so much better today!
  • YES!!!! Grilled cheese FTW!!!! Topped with sriracha!! All day.
  • Same here sisters. The first time in decades that I've eaten grilled cheese and it was my go-to in week 6.

7 weeks now and I'm surviving off pb&j's & corn flakes. Whaaaaaaa?!

Love reading your posts. So nice to not feel alone... Especially with it being so early on and the big news being mostly hush-hush

Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Ramen (haven't eaten that since college). Any other crap food, aside from sweets. Chips, fries, KFC tiny chicken sandwiches, Taco Bell....seriously cannot wait the three weeks until second tri starts.
  • I'm allergic to milk and gluten so finding food I actually want is even more of a challenge then usual. I've been on the grilled cheese sandwich train too but the taste of soy cheese was bothering me more than usual so I had to start smothering it in ketchup. My husband just looks at me confused but I love me some ketchup! Anything to help get food down.
  • I'm basically living on bagels, applesauce, toast, and string cheese.
  • Aaaand, now I have to go buy tomato soup and make grilled cheese.
  • Yes to all of the above. I'm eating grilled cheese and pizza almost everyday. And the leftover Halloween candy. I'm so terrified to go for my 12 week appointment in two weeks and find out how much weight I've gained!!
  • I'm eating exactly like this tonight I grilled chicken and nealy gagged. Made a pp&j instead all I want is sandwiches, lunchables, soup or cereal. All the carbs and no protien
    image
  • Grilled cheese (sourdough with havardi and basil with a little sirracha ketchup), and cereal, that's mostly what I live on.

Oddly now I want a grilled peanut butter sandwich, is that a thing?
  • Somehow Sooo reassuring to read this. Never been a picky eater...seriously feel like eating nothing besides couple of basic things. So yes! The palate 6 year old is the perfect title. Bless you..
