I'm 6 days pp and my milk has come in but barely anything at all comes out . Baby went from 8.1 to 7.6 which is normal. I top her off with formula in a syringe after each feeding . I got a breast pump and literally a teaspoon comes Out of each breast after pumping for 20 min. I really wanna breast feed. She latched on amazingly but she's always sucking and always hungry . She will suck on boob for hour straight trying to get something . Should I give it more time ?

Re: Low milk production

  • Keep trying! Try taking Fenugreek supplements daily. That helped me a lot with DD. Also you can try mothers milk tea. (Tastes gross but gets results.) Try and pump after every feeding and if possible once more in between. That will tell your body there is more demand and will increase your supply. Just remember that your LO is getting more than what you are pumping. If you keep having difficulties I would reach out to a lactation consultant as well, they will have some great advice. Just remember you are doing an amazing thing for your LO by continuing to give any breast milk you can, even if you have to supplement. Anything you can give them is so great! You got this don't give up!

  • Thanks so much :) I'll to find the supplements and tea
  • Keep at it mama! Pumping isn't an indicator of how much she is getting while nursing so be confident that she IS getting milk. Remember, her belly is still very little so it doesn't take much to fill her up.

See if there's a lactation resource at your hospital. Today I went to this session they have daily where a LC checks your baby's latch, gives tips, etc. they have a scale where you can weigh baby before and after feeding to see what they are getting. Like others said, pumping may not indicate much. I'm almost never am able to get much pumping.
  • Let your baby nurse as often as she wants! She's the one who will tell your body how much milk to make, pumping won't do that. And yes to fenugreek! Also keep taking your prenatal vitamins too and drink plenty of water.

  • I am just barely starting to see much when I pump. Though I know my baby is getting enough because of her diapers. A baby can drain your breast much better than a pump. Keep it up and you'll start to see more when you pump soon! Keep an eye on your baby's diaper output. That will be your best indication that they are eating enough!
  • My biggest mistake I made around your time frame pp was leaving my LO on one breast for the entire hour. My milk supply eventually dwindled and now 4 weeks pp I am struggling to get it back. Switch which breast she is nursing on every 15 minutes, unlatch her, burp her, and switch sides. I had no idea and I ended up signaling to my body to make less milk because of it.
  • Also my LC recommended more milk plus pills from mother love. You can find them on Amazon, they are pricey though $42 for a 20 day supply, but....they have more herbs than just fenugreek. I highly recommend the scale for a before and after weight. And pick up a book called a breastfeeding mothers guide to making more milk, it will help explain a lot of what may be causing your issue and how to solve it.
  • How much is your baby peeing and pooping? You want to see a professional if you suspect low supply. Have lo evaluated for tongue tie, and do weighed feedings. If you can power pump when taking the supplements and drink gatorade in addition to plenty of water. 6 or more wet diapers, a poop a day and weight gain are your best indicator of enough. And make sure baby is eating off both breasts during feeds.
  • I had the same issue. Baby was only peeing 2-3 times a day. The doctor had us start to supplement, and now I am just pumping. It' hard, but I just take it one day at a time.
