Baby Measuring in the 20th Percentile

Hi everyone. I'm 28 weeks along with a very little girl. My doctor is scheduling another anatomy scan at 32 weeks because she's concerned that our baby only measured in the 20th percentile at our 20 week anatomy scan (gender reveal). Has anyone had a baby measure this low? My belly growth is measuring on track. I'm trying to pack on the protein now since I tend to not eat much meat.

Re: Baby Measuring in the 20th Percentile

  • My baby is measuring small too and is in the 28th percentile. My doctor has had me get several thorough anatomy scans throughout my pregnancy to make sure that the baby continues to grow at the same rate, which he is. I'm pretty petite, so I'm not really surprised. I think as long as the baby grows at the same rate she has been, you're fine!

  • That's great to know! I'm not petite - I'm very tall and a normal weight so I was expecting a bigger baby but maybe not! Glad to read your baby is growing well!
  • My baby is in the 20th percentile for height and weight and 10th for head. They are doing extra u/s to monitor which had me a little concerned at first. But my other kids are very petite as well so I'm sure everything is fine.
  • I did not get this experience. However, my friend did and her little boy is just fine :)
  • My baby was measuring on target this whole pregnancy. I had to go to the hospital for a bleed two weeks ago where they did an ultrasound. I just had my OB appointment this morning and they said my fundal height hasn't been changing and they want to do a growth scan. Dr. Wouldn't tell me how off my measurements were and I didn't ask because I'm already a worrier. I have to go in Friday morning for the growth scan. Honestly, I'm trying not to think about it but it's hard not to feel afraid. I know this happens sometimes and it's usually fine but that's not giving me a lot of comfort.

I'm 31 weeks now and at my ultrasound last week she measured in the 13th percentile, so don't be worried! The doctor told me she is just tiny and that there's still time to grow, but she ordered another scan at 34 weeks just to check up on her.
I asked if it was anything I did wrong, perhaps I need to eat more, and she said eating more will only make me pack on the fat! I'm sure we just have little peanuts in there, nothing wrong with that :)

ETA: she also said anything below 10th percentile is when they really start to get concerned!
  • My sister in law's second pregnancy, her son was measuring small during her third trimester. Her uterus was also measuring very small, but everything else seemed fine. Her doctor ended up inducing about 2 weeks early and he was 5lbs 14oz and has been in the lower percentile since. He's now almost 4 months and super healthy and fine, he's just a little on the small side.

  • I was also told babies are measuring small at my appt today. They checked the chord and everything looks normal but they are having me come in weekly for growth scans for the next 2 weeks then after that for nst twice a week. It is their stomachs the fau dr was concerned with so she wants to make sure the placenta isn't causing any problems.

  • Same here. At my 28 week appointment I was measuring a week behind in fundal height. I have my growth scan next week, but am not worried as babies all grow at different rates. I am also very petite and have always had problems keeping weight on. That being said, I've gained 10 pounds, so baby is obviously growing :) . Also, for the sake of my nether regions, I am perfectly ok with having an average sized or slightly less than average sized baby ;)
  • My babies been measuring small the whole time, she's in the 4th percentile, I've been having an ultra sound every week to make sure she's growing at the same rate and she is so the doctors aren't worried.
  • Ours is measuring in 10th percentile with femur and head in the 3rd. Strange. We think gestational date is off. The MFM s are monitoring through weekly Doppler and monthly growth US. He's active though and maintain a consistent growth rate
  • My DS measured in the 26th percentile. He was totally healthy turns out I just make little babies ( this one's measuring 33rd percentile). He's still skinny but average height 8).
  • At an ultra sound at 26 weeks I was told my baby was measuring overall in the 33rd percentile and his stomach is measuring in the 9th. They are most concerned with his stomach since its under the 10th. They scheduled me for another ultra sound to check the growth rate.

I was over weight when getting pregnant, I've lost about 20 pounds and still have problems keeping food down or having an appetite. I was told to try to eat more and healthy foods to make sure the baby is getting the nutrients he needs.
  • I was starting to worry, my issue is opposite, at 29 weeks I was told my baby was in the 75th percentile, I was told they worried if too little and too big
  • I had my growth scan today and they said he was measuring in the 34th percentile. His heart rate was really low last week(125) but this week was 145 which made me feel alot better. It still makes me nervous but I'm glad they'll be monitoring him just to be safe. I'm a FTM and it's hard sometimes to just let things be and trust it'll be alright. I was assured he was within an okay percentile range though.
  • My OB never really talked about perc lentils while I was pregnant, but at birth DD was in the 10-15th %ile for weight. Doc wasn't worried at all, said FTMs typically have babes on the smaller side, and as long as growth fm tracked well for the first few months it was nothing to worry about. That being said, her head was in the 90th %ile so she was obviously developing and not wanting for nutrition. Trust that your doc is watching carefully and would let you know as soon as he suspected that there was an issue.
  • I've just been told my bump is measuring 5 weeks behind, my baby is very small and the baby has a small stomach. I was induced at 37 weeks on my daughter and she was 5pounds exactly and is perfect weight and height now for her age. So I'm not going to worry unless they give me reason too. I'm sure your baby is fine just a little small. X
  • I was in 17th percentile at 21 weeks and 20th percentile at 24weeks. Dr wasn't concerned and said babies develop at different rates and as long as i am gaining weight he is happy.baby was 501g at 24 weeks and was 1175g at 28 weeks so my obgyn is happy with that
  • I am measuring small, but my growth scan revealed a healthy baby girl in the 45% (weighing in at 4lbs2oz with 8 weeks to go). The doctor said she is on track to be near 8lbs.
  • I don't know much about the accuracy of these things. My fundal height measured behind by at least a week the entirety of my first pregnancy. My son was born naturally at 37+3 and weighed 6lbs 7oz. This pregnancy I am also measuring behind in fundal height. My midwife wanted ordered a growth scan because I am doing some travel and want to make sure things are good before I go. Even though my fundal height is behind baby measured in the 85% for size. My baby bump looks tiny compared to others at the same stage as me (and this is my second). The ultrasound tech said baby was measuring at 3lbs and 9oz. this has to be an estimate because and I am curious what the margin of error is at this point.
  • My lil guy measured in the 20th percentile @ 20wk scan. Doctor doesn't seemed concerned and didn't say anything about another scan. She said she's only concerned when they're in 10th percentile and lower or 90th percentile and higher. I'll worry when the doctor worries.
  • I don't think there is a definite correlation between fundal height and fetal weight but I may be wrong.  I believe growth scans are much more accurate indicators and typically within a 15% margin of error.

This is for 2-3 weeks before birth but gives an idea:  https://fetalmedicine.org/abstracts/2015/var/pdf/abstracts/0868.pdf
