Congestion in newboen

Hi all,

DD is 6 weeks old currently. For the past few weeks she hasn't been able to lay flat because it sounds like she's gurgling and choking. We thought it might be silent reflux bc DS had this. They did an upper GI and found no reflux but started her on meds anyway to see if it would help. It's made a slight improvement but now she mostly sounds like she has phlegm in her throat. It always happens after eating and wakes her up from sleep. The only way she sleeps is on my chest. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm at a loss what to do. Thank you for any input!

Re: Congestion in newboen

  • Same thing happening with my 6 week old also. Makes me so sad to see her so uncomfortable..

  • I started using a humidifier near his crib and it's improved by making the mucus looser. He sneezes and I can remove the mucus with a washcloth. It was just a little bit of congestion.
  • Same here baby is 6 weeks 4 days and is going through this and do not know what to do!
  • Humidifier during sleep, saline and nose suction before feedings and slightly elevate when lying down (rock n play or boppy). Ped said this is very common since space between nose and throat isn't fully developed.
  • Thanks everyone! I'm going to be getting a humidifier asap!
  • The saline drops in morning and evening have really helped congestion in our LO.

  • My newborn sounded congested every morning, even after having a humidifier on in the room every night. We started using hydrasense spray for newborns and nose frieda day and night. The doctor also said some babies have access gas causing those noises, so she advised to burp between feeds, keeping her upright for a bit after I feed her and doing the bicycle movements with her legs when she's on her back. She also said tummy time helps. Our baby is now 8 weeks and all those noises are gone! I hope you find what works for you and baby :)
  • My LO is 9 weeks old and has had this issue pretty much since birth. We've seen the pediatrician about it and have been told everything is completely normal (even had a chest xray done due to breathing abnormalities which came back totally normal as well) I highly recommend investing in a nose Frida. It grossed me out at first but tbh I got over it quickly knowing it's helping my son. He has to sleep on an incline. We've tried transitioning him into his bassinet multiple times, the most recent being 2 days ago, but he just ends up coughing and choking on mucus. We've had to resort to him sleeping in a swing at night exclusively.

  • Do you or your DH smoke? My DH does but only twice a day and he would change clothes and wash hands and even shower and found out the smell would stay on his hair and even holding her for a short period of time was what was stuffing him up at night. He's never smoked in the house or car but just that tiny exposure was enough to do it.
  • Neither of us smokes. I have been doing little remedies saline solution and that seems to be helping somewhat. Hopefully this will pass soon. Thank you for all the great suggestions everyone. It's greatly appreciated!
  • Nosefrida works wonders for us.
