1st Trimester

Zofran?

I took it last time and it worked for me and DD turned out just fine. However, since Id heard about the lawsuit, I'd said I wouldn't use it this time around. I was talking to my OB about it and he said that the percentage of birth defects is the exact same with or without Zofran. Thoughts? Flame me if you want -- I'm just tired of feeling like this and it hasn't even been that long. Blahhhhh

Note: Gingerale and Preggie Pops haven't done anything for me

Lurker: I also agree with your dr. Every pregnancy is diffrent mine may not be like yours. I did take zofran with my last 2 pregnancy almost the whole time and I have happy healthy children. But no one can make the decision but you. Good luck!

  • I also agree with your doctor. My doctor wouldn't give me zofran until I was about 6 months along and I didn't understand why until he explained to me that in the first trimester and first part of the second, that the facial features are still developing and that's were those lawsuits came in as a result of taking it before the facial features are fully developed.
But if you still feel sick after those months like me then ask for it because it really does help.
My doctor also suggested a bland diet as well which only helps a little.
  • I take a medicine called Diclegis, maybe you could ask about that instead of Zofran. I was sick all day every day and it helped me sooo much.
  • Thank you!

  • I took Zofran last time around... DS was born with a heart defect. Not sure if it was from Zofran but I am staying farrrrrr away

  • I think it's a case-by-case issue. If you're not able to function due to morning sickness, by GOD take the stinkin medication. I took Reglan during mine, and after reading about the dangers of it, I was really freaked out! But I also couldn't even stand up, or walk, or eat, and I could barely drink, unless I took the pills. You do what you have to do to survive.

That study on zofran was funded by another drug company.

Yup this. It's bullshit meant to stop Zofran from keeping their corner on the morning sickness market by other drug companies with competing products. As your doctor said, the percentage of birth defects in people using Zofran was the same as the general population...that is not significant to prove Zofran was the cause. If you feel like crap and can't eat, for God's sake take the zofran.
  • I have heard that there are around 200 lawsuits that have been brought to court relating to Zofran. 1 case study showed no difference in birth defects and another showed a two fold increase in defects such as heart defects, cleft palate and club foot. Personally, I would only take it if I had HG or chronic morning sickness and would delay starting it as long as possible as the jury is still out on this drug. Maybe just do a little research and see how you feel. Sea bands and acupuncture are another option you might like to try. Hope you feel better soon.
  • Thanks

  • The morning sickness recently hit me and my doctor said he didn't like to start it until after 12 weeks. He recommended me taking vitamin B6 and Unisom, which I was very sceptical about but it surprisingly works! But I would definitely go with what your doctor recommends! Best of luck
  • I took diclegis for my first pregnancy and it helped... But for my current pregnancy which is my second diclegis has not worked and my doctor told me to try Zofran and assured me it was safe. It was a miracle! If I didn't have a full time job I would have stayed on diclegis and endured but in order to function 9 hrs a day at work I had to give Zofran a try... And I'm glad I did! I am in my 8th week... Every medication poses a potential risk!
