Codeine

Has anyone taken codeine in their first trimester yet or before?? I have a severe headache and have a huge two days of work at a fashion event. I don't know how I'm even going to get ready let alone work. I read that you can take codeine? Is that right?

This is according to Ovia Pregnancy app. Some doctors say to avoid category c and some say small risk may be worth the benefit IF NOTHING ELSE WORKS. I'd try Tylenol and making sure you are well hydrated. And ask you doctor.

  • Agreed, definitely give your doc a call and try some acetaminophen in the mean time, its category B, generally safe during pregnancy.

I would try just taking tylenol and drinking a coke for the caffeine first. If that doesn't work, call your doctor and ask about the risk. That being said, I got a shot of codeine at the hospital with dd before I realized I was pregnant and she is fine.

ETA: If migraines/headaches are pretty common for you, ask your doctor about fioricet. My OB prescribed it to me for migraines with dd and it worked pretty well.

  • My dr prescribed magnesium oxide for headaches and it works really well! Hope you feel better!
  • I definitely would call your doctor before taking any codeine. I agree with PP about Tylenol and a diet coke or coffee.

    Good luck!

i had JUST started 2nd Tri when me & my SO got into quite a bad car accident. 2 days after the accident the pain was so bad i went to my OB to see if there was anything other than just Tylenol that i could possibly use for pain, & he prescribed T3's, which have 30mg (i think) of codeine in them.. i only got 15 tabs, & was told to only take them if absolutely necessary.

i personally would try Tylenol Migraine first. i would also talk to your personal OB first before taking any codeine. sorry to hear about your situation. good luck!
