Positive fetal fibronectin test - no immediate signs of labor

I had a bout of terrible stomach pain yesterday with what felt like lower back cramps (I had back labor with my first, I remember it well). I went to see the OB and they did a battery of tests. Basically, they did a test for fetal fibronectin protein which came back positive. My cervix is long and closed. I'm 30 weeks tomorrow. But my baby, according to ultrasound is measuring in the 96th percentile  @-) I understand the test isn't conclusive for anything in particular but my positive result is puzzling my OB.

Did anyone else have a positive Ffn test that still went to term? Or at least 38 weeks?

  • With the FFN, a negative result is very accurate and a positive result is drastically less accurate which is good news. There are a lot of factors that can cause a false positive also. If you had sex or basically had anything in your vagina within 24 hours before the test, including a cervix check (manual or by TVUS) or any medicine administered by vaginal suppository, you can throw a false positive. Not sure if any of this applies to you, just a thought!

  • ^^this exactly.
I had two negative tests done and the negative results are the reliable ones. You are much for likely to get a positive and stay pregnant well past that two week window (this from my OB and multiple ones on call who I've seen in L&D for PTL).
Hope your little one stays cooking!!
  • I had a positive test at 35 weeks, and I am 40 tomorrow! In labor as we speak...so don't stress-it doesn't mean you will definitely go!
  • I had a positive FFN test at 26 weeks and actually started labour. I was put on bedrest and then had another positive FFN test at 33 weeks....I'm still pregnant and will be 40 weeks on Wednesday :)
  • I had a positive FFN test with my twins at 31 weeks and went on to be induced at 37 weeks. This test definitely does not mean you will go into preterm labor. Good luck!
