Brown Stringy Discharge

Sorry for the TMI!

6 weeks today and started having some brown string discharge. Any ideas?

Re: Brown Stringy Discharge

  • Did you call your doctor? Better to be safe than sorry. I had brown spotting around 7pm at 4w4d and paged my doctor and he saw me in his office at 9pm and did an ultrasound. I'd call and see, they might not have you come in and just monitor it but it's something they might want to know.

If you're not seeing red blood or having cramps, it is probably okay, though.

  • Agree. I had the same for a few days at 5w, I called my doc and had an early u/s at 6w. Don't freak out, it's probably nothing but definitely keep an eye on it, especially if it turns red and heavy and comes with cramping!

  • Just to add: my doc did a pelvic exam when he saw me and said he saw old blood, no bright red blood, and that it could take a while to come down. This helped me A LOT as I now know what to expect. Checking in with the doctor might give you some peace of mind.

  • I had a lot brownish discharge DD. I think it lasted my entire first tri. The OB said it was probably just old blood. Always feel free to call your doc if you're concerned, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

  • My first appointment is until the 17th. My doctor wasn't much help. They said that anytime you have bleeding during pregnancy you should go to the ER. Maybe it's time to find a new doc!

It started yesterday as very dark brown blood, now today it's a little redder. Trying not worry! No severe cramps or anything though.
  • Yes, time to find a new doc! I've had spotting twice this pregnancy and had it with DD. the U/S tech said I had a SCH and that it will take care of itself.

  • I had this, along with some bright red blood and cramps with my last pregnancy (around 10 weeks). Everything was fine. Doctor just put me on pelvic rest for a few weeks (i.e., no sex or riding a bike). Bleeding in early pregnancy is pretty normal, and if it's brown, it's probably just old blood. If you're worried though, see your doctor.
