Pre E Research

Hello,
I am looking for reputable resources on Pre E.
I am 12w PP,   LO was 3 days before DD. Induction due to rapid onset, severe Pre E. We went from slightly elevated BP and Protein on Monday to tendon issues, 200/120 BP and high protein.

My husband and I are looking for any type of information on Pre E that can help us decide if/when to have another child. Also if we need to find a specialist or different OB/hospital.

Thank you.

I had sudden onset severe pre-e with my first. Not sure about sites to look at, I googled general information but I can at least give you my personal experience.

I was induced at 35W with LO1 due to sudden onset severe pre-e (208/118bp). It took about 3 months post delivery for my blood pressure to go back to normal. From what I understand, the risk with subsequent pregnancies is higher if you have a history of pre-e and they watch you closer for any symptoms. I was not referred to a high risk dr for future pregnancies because I didn't show any symptoms of pre-e again but would have been had I started showing any signs. It might be worth looking into people in your area to see who you would turn to if things started to get rough again and talk to your OB about any concerns.

LO2 was full term and I had no issues with the pregnancy except mild anemia. Successful VBAC.

Currently 33-1/2W with LO3 and no blood pressure/protein/swelling issues so far.

For each pregnancy they have advised me to look for the early signs of pre-e such as swelling, pain in right side, headaches, nausea, changes in vision. I have a blood pressure monitor at home from after I had LO1 and get my readings to be sure if I'm ever feeling off. It has been slightly elevated at times but nothing serious (high 130s on the top line). I think the risk in subsequent pregnancies is about 15% (versus 2% with an uncomplicated first delivery).

I didn't want LO1 to be an only child so that is what influenced me to have one more LO. LO3 was a surprise. It's definitely a personal decision made by you and your husband. Yes, the risk is there and it is scary. Especially when there are no warning signs the first time (I had no signs other than weight gain and then a sudden horrible headache). The blood pressure monitor has given me peace of mind at home to know when I'm feeling off it's not due to climbing blood pressure. There is an increased risk with a subsequent child so you just need to weigh if the risk is worth it to you - for some people it isn't, and that it fine. Good luck in whatever decision you make.

    LO1 - due 12/13/10; born 11/10/10
    LO2 - due 3/3/14; born 2/24/14
    LO3 - due 12/13/15

@irisheyez123, Thank you for sharing. My main concerns are that we are pretty far from any specialists, so our timing might be a serious issue with if we can have another one.

I had preeclampsia with my first and am now almost 33 weeks with number 2. So far, no signs of preeclampsia. I am monitored more closely- every 2 weeks vs 4 and had a work up fr baseline labs and 24 hour urine protein. Other than that, it makes you higher risk to they it again, but it's not a guarantee you will get it as there isn't a way to prevent it. Mayo Clinic is a reputable source you might find helpful. I did take folic acid 4,000 mg through 6 months prior TTC and my first 3 months of pregnancy at my midwife's recommendation. Good Luck!
