Teething symptoms?? Help!

My LO just got her first tooth last week. She's just over 7 months. Monday evening she started to feel a little warm and was clingy and whiny. (Pretty unlike her.) she was up most of the night, feeling very warm, restless, just couldn't sleep. She was tugging at her ear a little, also. Because of the ear tugging, I took her to her pediatrician just to be sure we weren't looking at an ear infection. (They basically thought I was crazy for bringing her in because she didn't have a fever. Although to me she is very warm!) She seemed in a better mood during the day, still clingier than normal, then that evening she was almost back to her normal mood again. Then again, that night, very warm and restless. Yesterday was the same, sleepier during the day (I'm sure from being up most of the night) and VERY warm and restless last night. Her "fever" has never reached over 99.5, it's usually about 98.5 or closer to her norm when I take it, even though she feels so warm!!! (Her norm is around 97 to 97.5). I felt her gums last night and they seem to be swollen in the spot where the next tooth should be coming in at. She had no issues like this with the first tooth last week. Not only am I a first time mom, but I'm a huge worrier on top of that. Any advice or insight would be great. Is this normal?? This has me worried sick. I'm used to my happy baby!

(We typically use hylands tablets, last night I tried a small amount of Tylenol instead, just not a lot of relief I'm afraid.)

Re: Teething symptoms?? Help!

  • I have used Tylenol and Motrin before bed with some relief (although they can be combined, it was never bad enough that she needed both). Unfortunately, you may just have to wait it through. Tough to do when your LO seems uncomfortable, but there's just no tried and true teething relief! Hope that you get some good advice here. But just know that the symptoms you are describing are completely normal. And certainly do not feel bad for going to the doctor! I would always remind my patients that it is better to be over cautious than to miss something!

  • I understand your hesitation to use medication but Tylenol or Motrin is soooo helpful with teething. Do you have a dosing guide to refer to, based on weight? I try to only give medication when he seems really inconsolable, personally.

Try soaking a baby washcloth in very cold water and give it to her to chew on. I fill a bowl with ice and cold water and just keep it nearby on really tough days.
  • I never give my daughter medicine unless that's the only option and she had two teeth coming in at once and she acted the same way so I would give her Tylenol before bed so she could rest better and it helped a lot. I tried teething gel but it didn't seem to help any

Definitely be careful with the numbing gels. Doctors don't recommend anything with benzocaine be given to children under 2.
  • @DustyMelons her doctor recommend it and it's an all natural gel but I never use it anyway because it's just an aggravation to her trying to get it in her mouth
  • Sounds exactly how my little guy has been the last couple days! No teeth yet here but I'm guessing soon!!
  • You describe the same symptoms my daughter is having too, as well as I'm a first time mom and worry too , my daughter has been like this 2 1/2 days and still going , as well she has diarrhea but trying giving pedialyte that seems to work for a little
