3rd Trimester

HELP! Mucus plug?

Okay, so I'm 30 1/2 weeks pregnant.. And I've had really heavy discharge for the past two/three weeks. Tonight I got some really sharp cramps right near my cervix and I felt my vagina and when I looked at my hand it looked like there was a string of snot on it? It was thick and greenish white.. Idk. I feel really nauseous now and I'm just trying to relax.

Just to clarify, are you nauseous because of seeing/touching the discharge or as another symptom? Also, I am a bit confused - did you wipe and see it or go up inside when you felt your vagina? Call your doctor? It sounds like it might be part of your mucus plug, but the (unrelated?) nausea and not feeling well might be concerning. Also, they might want to note the mucus plug thing in your file. Or just check you out. However, I am not a medical professional, so I am unqualified to offer an opinion.

  • Just stay calm. I've read that some women begin losing the plug earlier than others. Just go ahead and give your doctor a call first thing in the morning. I noticed increased discharge for about a few days last week and I figured it was apart of being 32 weeks pregnant. I ended up losing my mucus plug a few days ago. I called my doctor and they had me come in to check everything out.

The only part of you telling her all of this that really bothers me is that you DIDN'T mention that you are in preterm labor and had to get a steroid shot and possibly be put on bed rest. Please please please don't give advice but not give your full story. OP, please contact your doctor. The 1st response you received was good advice. Good luck!

I am 32 weeks pregnant today and I noticed some mild menstrual like cramps in my lower back and front abdomen really low. I also was pretty sure that I lost my mucus plug (which they confirmed) I called my doctor and they sent me in to l & d and it turns out I am in preterm labor. I am currently dilated 2cm and 80% effaced. I was having meds through anIV to slow contractions which seems to have helped for now and steroid shots to help get baby girl ready just in case she wants to make her entrance. If nothing else changes soon I might go home on strict bedrest for a few weeks

  • Side note - mucus plugs can regenerate!
  • I started losing my MP around 30 with my last two pregnancies. This time with my third I lost a good chunk around 14 weeks. I had an ultrasound done at that time to make sure everything was okay (which it was). My midwive wasn't concerned since my cervix was good and closed. It's worth mentioning to your dr but *probably* isn't an indication of anything.
  • I've had very heavy discharge since falling pregnant, I had it checked and it's not thrush or BV, just my body's natural response to pregnancy. TMI, but sometimes mine is like how you have described, it's almost like it clots and goes a bit snotty. This is especially true in the morning. My midwife said this was totally normal. I wouldn't describe mine as jellylike, which is often how people describe the plug. Get checked for peace of mind, also worth getting checked for thrush just in case. A lot of people have a bit of blood streaked in with the mucus plug, this is a more definite sign you've lost it. Remember many people don't go into labour until weeks after they've lost their plug, some a few days or some even lose the plug during labour. Good luck and do get it checked :)
