TV Before Age 2?

Anyone else strict about this rule ?
How is family/IL's reacting?

My 5 month old was over at MIL's place the other day while I was at work. She told me that she had let LO watch an "educational" program on TV. I've expressed multiple times that we are not okay with tv until he reaches the two year mark. She told me that next time she wasn't even going to tell me (WTH). Why do people feel like they can do whatever they want with our kids??

I'm not as strict as some people. I'll have the tv on in the background while playing with LO and occasionally I've let him watch it for short periods of time so I can get something around the house done. The main concern is making sure tv doesn't become a replacement for your parenting and that as they get older there are boundaries and you don't just let them watch TV whenever they want. The AAP has even updated their stance a bit about screen time. However, I still think it's completely disrespectful of your MIL to not follow your wishes.

I Agree with PP. I'm not very strict on it. We are a big football/soccer family so now that its football season, the TV is usually on. I do make sure that I try and place DS facing away from the TV and that I am playing with him and interacting with him with toys and songs. I usually only do this during our team games (Saints). I will take him to the nursery/bedroom/kitchen and play with him in those rooms for the games I don't care for.

I'm strict about TV. My DD was only recently allowed to start watching Daniel Tiger on the kindle once in a while and she's 2.5. I watch TV after the kids are asleep.

I'm not so strict about the phone though. DD likes to watch videos of herself and now so does DS. They're only a minute or two though, and sometimes I think it reinforces whatever new skill I captured her doing by watching herself do it. Like, when she first started saying her name. But perhaps that's the story I tell myself in order to not feel guilty! Hahaha.

About your MIL - yes, that's pretty disrespectful. And also, it sounds like, a risk you take by leaving LO in her care. Bummer she's not willing to honor your wishes.

You need to find someone else to watch your child then! She will keep doing whatever she wants to! Your child but her grandchild.
