already completely out of shape in first trimester?!

I'm only about 8.5 weeks pregnant and have already started gaining weight (not a big deal, still a manageable weight). I've been exercising a bit less than usual, not necessarily because I've been pregnant, but I've been busy with work. Last night I went to the pool and I could only swim 50 yards at a time!! I normally can swim pretty much indefinitely...not fast, but I can at least keep going! I also noticed while I was surfing that I got out of breath REALLY easily. Can I really be this out of shape at 8.5 weeks???

Re: already completely out of shape in first trimester?!

  • I teach dance classes and have been too tired to function outside of the classroom. I'm in the second trimester now, and my energy has somewhat caught up with me, but omg am I uncomfortable stretching and jumping around now!
  • Loading the player...
  •  I went swimming again this morning and I think I know what the problem is...I get out of breath way too easily now! Even walking up the stairs gets me winded. This isn't as much of a problem when doing other exercise like running (I go slow anyway)...I just breathe heavier...but it's hard to breathe more when you're swimming.
  • Yes, totally normal.  Gets a little better in the 2nd Tri., but just a little :)  (definitely not nearly as much as I was hoping!)

He settles her in her home as a happy mother of children, praise the Lord! (Psalms 113:9)

  • Totally normal. For me, it got way, WAY better in my second trimester.

And then worse again in my third, just because I was so big there was no space for breathing or any other normal body functions! But I still had more energy than in my first tri.
  • Yes! That is actually how I found out I was preggo- I was so so so out of breath and shape. I couldn't walk up my stairs without needing to sit down. It was very unlike me as I exercise more times a week than not so obviously it warranted a doctor visit.

I am 13 weeks now and it is getting a lot better! I will still get out of breath faster than I think necessary, but no where near what it was two months ago! So it gets better!

Because of that though I am having a hard time in the gym now because I had to take so many weeks off =/ Hoping that aspect gets better soon.
  • I'm 16.5 weeks today and all of a sudden I feel normal. Last time I could only swim 50 yards at a time, today I swam 500 meters. So weird!
