High-Risk Pregnancy

Fluid around baby's head and abdomen

Had a scan done at 13 weeks which showed fluid around my baby's head and abdomen. They didn't say how much but doctor thinks it maybe chromosomal or otherwise. I'm almost sick with worry and scared of losing my baby as I've had three miscarriages before and this is the first time I've ever gotten this far along with my LO. My doctor has said that it is likely though that we'll not make it to term :(

An amnio was suggested to be done in a few weeks time to check for chromosomal abnormalities and the like. It seems like an eternity until that day comes

Re: Fluid around baby's head and abdomen

  • I'm so sorry...but ultrasounds can be extremely unclear and, as it sounds like you know, if there's a genetic abnormality, then the pregnancy usually miscarries early on. (I had an early trisomy 13 loss.) Fluid is either harmless or absorbs a lot, too. At 18 weeks they saw fluid on my baby's brain in an ultrasound so they sent us for a fetal MRI. The MRI came back normal, but the fluid remained so they watched it closely. I gave birth last month and they offered us an ultrasound of her brain to be sure.

If your doctor is a regular OB, then I would ask to be referred to a specialist. Also, if you'd have to wait on amnio is CVS or a cell free DNA test like Materna Plus an option right now?

Thinking of you and sending positive thoughts and prayers your direction.

  • I was told my baby has fluid on the brain and now going to specialist. I'm 34 weeks 5 days and this was caught at 32 weeks. We have to have an ultrasound on her brain in Jan as long as she is doing well till then. Keep ur head up. And ask to be sent to a specialist.
