Hydronephrosis

I am 29 weeks pregnant. Last night I went to the ER for what I thought was a bad UTI. I had urgency to pee nonstop and pain in my uterus. It was unbearable and the discomfort was causing me not to get comfortable or sleep. I also had pain on the right side of my back. They checked for kidney stones, but it ended up being Hydronephrosis. It is a swelling of the tubes going from my kidney to bladder and in my kidneys. The doctor gave me Tylenol and said these symptoms could come and go until I have the baby. It's not fun. Has anyone else had this? If so, did it last throughout your pregnancy?

  • Yikes! I have no experience, but hope it doesn't cause you too much pain before baby arrives!

This is my first time back in LITERALLY MONTHS! But just like you I am 29 +5 went to the ER yesterday for kidney pain...and the house doctor said I may have Hydronephrosis. She did not do an ultrasound on my kidneys because my next OB appt is Wednesday. 2 weeks ago I complained to my OB about kidney pain and thought that I had an UTI... It all came back negative. My pain just ended up being so bad yesterday I went to the hospital. I have it on both sides but my left side is worse. I cannot sleep comfortably on either side and wake up so much more than my first pregnancy in the middle of the night to go pee and it never seems to be a lot of urine coming out.

All this is common for Hydronephrosis. We may develop more infections due to urine/fluid retention in our kidneys so if I end up getting more UTIs until the end of this pregnancy..I wouldn't be surprised. The main thing is to keep drinking water at least 8 to 10 cups a day to flush away. Cranberry juice is something I'm drinking as well to help fight infections. At this point the doctor told me there is nothing that I can do besides have the baby. There is no "cure" for it. For the pain my OB wanted to prescribe me Codeine which I thought was a little too much. But the hospital prescribed me Pyridium which will numb the area where I'm in pain and alleviates discomfort. But other than that they said Tylenol. Not more than 4000mg a day.

The most extreme case I have heard is someone having a stent placed in them to drain the fluids from the kidneys but since I'm so close to delivering the doctors are totally against that unless absolutely necessary.

Oh.. But final outcome I did end up developing a UTI and was prescribed Macrobid and the Pyridium for pain which I feel more comfortable taking than Codeine.

It will last throughout your pregnancy from what I'm told... But the pain is different for everyone. Some can tolerate it because it may be mild discomfort while others have more severe discomfort.
