Making the switch to a midwife

Hey mamas, I am in the process of deciding to switch from my obgyn to a midwife in order to have a home birth. My question is for anyone who has made a switch like this before. Obviously it will be different for everyone depending on your care provider and your insurance but, after making the switch how did payments to your first care provider work? Did you owe for partial care or did your insurance cover everything you have done up until the switch? From what I understand, prenatal checkups are technically covered and it is only the delivery that you pay your care provider for. It would seem odd to leave my provider though, and not owe anything. 

A little about my personal situation, I am 26 weeks pregnant. My Obgyn is not part of a team or specific hospital, so the hospital also has their own separate charges.
