Sleep Vent

So this is my 3rd and I've been through it before, but why can't my babies sleep in their bassinets!  They sleep fine all day of course in my arms or in the bouncer, but never on their backs.  And all the things that people suggest are not SIDS friendly and I am just so paranoid.  You can't swaddle anymore, raise the bassinet, put them on their tummies or sides or co-sleep.  Well, of course, you can do these things and feel totally comfortable, but I just am not comfortable with them.  Gah!  It's going to be a long 12 weeks.

Re: Sleep Vent

  • Who says you can't swaddle?! All the medical professionals I've spoken with say to swaddle, heck they even swaddled in the hospital! My baby struggled in the bassinet at first - would even fall right asleep in my bed, but not the bassinet right next to the bed! Our pediatrician said baby can sleep on her side if she does it naturally (mine does!) and allowed us to prop her bassinet mattress up so she wasn't completely flat. We also use white noise and covered the bassinet mattress with a shirt my husband wore so she would smell him (babies have a strong sense of smell).

  • Oh my goodness, no swaddling?!? Where did that come from. My baby was in the NICU the past 4 days and they kept him swaddled the whole time and even gave my husband a class on different ways to swaddle. I Think he would not sleep if we didn't swaddle him.
  • I've never heard that you can't swaddle. The nurses swaddled him the hospital and we swaddle every single night.
  • I did read something that said some doctors don't recommend swaddling after reaching 2 months. I don't remember the source. Unfortunately I also don't remember the reason given. It either had to do with being associated with hip dysplasia or a small increase in SIDS.
  • From my understanding - if you swaddle arms in, baby can not move if they end up face down.. this seems to be the latest concern about swaddling.

Hip dysplasia was mentioned at my infant care and CPR class yesterday, after the two month mark. Swaddling has been highly recommended at the classes I took!

  • Different nurses told us different things at our hospital. I guess arms out swaddling is the new recommendation? Kind of defeats the purpose of swaddling if you ask me :-?
