Nipple size change - when?

FTM confusion!

I use bornfree bottles. Currently we are on level 1 nipples because they are for 0-3 months. My baby is 15 weeks and will be 4 months on 11/10. Should I switch him to level 2 nipples for 3-6 months?

I ebf so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Re: Nipple size change - when?

  • I ebf and moved to level 2 at 3 months.
  • I made the switch to Dr Browns Level 2 nipples at 3 months. My baby didn't really seem to notice the difference.

  • I was reading not to switch nipples if you're EBF unless you're ready to wean. I don't want him to favor the faster flow of the bottle over breast so at 16+ weeks we are still on 1 nipples from Dr Browns, not planning to size up at this point.
  • I EBF so I'm staying with the slow flow nipples until I want to wean him.

My baby is 15 weeks and I changed him to size 3-6 months nipples at 3 months but because he didn't like the size 1 nipples.
  • I never thought to keep it at level 1 to match the breast... Makes sense though.
  • I use Dr brown bottles and I'm still using level 1...I don't know when to switch to level 2 because she has reflux, will the faster flow cause more air swallowed?? I'm afraid it will make reflux worse if more air is swallowed.
  • I EBF and have no intention of switching to a higher flow nipple. My little guy doesn't even like to work hard enough to eat after I pump, I can't imagine how he'd be if he had a faster flow nipple all weekend while I'm at work.
  • My baby is 15 weeks and we are still on level 1, but I will switch to level 2 soon, maybe this week. She tried to take so much but the bottle does not vent fast enough and the nipple gets inverted. I'm using glass bottles, btw. I also think moving to tolde bigger size will help her eat more. She only eats 22-24 oz a day and I think it's too little
  • Mine is 17 weeks and EBF I use Dr. Brown and the premie nipple. I never thought about going up in size.
  • I also heard the same about keeping it at a slow flow nipple while EBF. But I think whatever works best for your LO would be the route to go! :)
  • You can try it out. Our daughter is 19 weeks old and on preemie nipples, it is the flow she likes. The 0-3 month ones she kept choking. We saw 3 different lactation specialists and she is working with an OT and even our pediatrician said, there is no rush to switch nipples. You can switch and try it out whenever, but don't get discouraged if they aren't on the 3-6 month and they are around that age. If you think about it, when women breastfeed there babies, there nipples don't change flow. As long as your baby keeps gaining. :) we still try to introduce her to the slow flow, I don't think it would hurt for you to introduce the next flow. :D good luck!
  • @Melis222 I use dr. browns also and my LO is EFF. he also has a bit of reflux. for us, he uses level 1 nipples if given premade liquid formula, and level 2 for the powder. it was as if the liquid (since a lot smoother) came out waaaaay to fast on level 2 and he vomitted a few times. in the next couple weeks I will probably try to give him level 2 for both. he's 3 months right now and the reason it occurred to me to switch nipples in the first place was because he would scream and refuse the bottle even though I knew he was hungry. took me a day or two to figure what was going on!
  • @astraealynn thanks for the input, my LO is a few days shy of 4 months old so I should probably give the level 2 a try. I just am afraid to rock the boat with her reflux.
  • We use Tommee Tippee and EFF here and I bought a couple of the number 2 flow and the nipple is collapsing, but it didn't do that with the 1. i;m thinking it could be b/c the 1's are broken in but thought it was a bit odd.
