Pregnant after a Loss

Successful pregnancy after D&C (need some reassurance)

Hello everyone, I very recently had a D&C, as at our first 10 week dr appointment we discovered out baby had no heartbeat. I'm feeling better physically each day, although emotionally its up and down (I know that's normal) . My husband and I are still hopeful for the future, but I really wanted to get some reassurance from those who have become pregnant after a D&C and how long it took you to TTC.

Re: Successful pregnancy after D&C (need some reassurance)

  • I can't tell you how long it might've taken in a normal situation, and I can't even tell you that this pregnancy will work out for me (it's stil really early) but I am pregnant now!! I had 3 d+c's for one pregnancy (which was particularly tenacious), the last one in late August. I got one period 4 weeks later, and ovulated soon after that... And here we are- conceived late Sept. I'm pregnant and terrified. Of course I can't say it would happen as quickly for you, different bodies and all, but if after three d+c's my body is still functioning, I feel pretty strongly that it will happen for you soon! Best of luck and I'm very sorry for your loss.

  • So sorry for your loss. My husband and I had a d&c at 10 weeks. Baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I got my first cycle 5 weeks to the date after my procedure. I got my second cycle 4 weeks after that and we got pregnant the beginning of this month. We are 4w4d. First ultrasound is at 7 weeks. Fingers crossed. You are in the hardest stretch right now but it will be over before you know it and you'll be on the other side. Prayers for you!!
  • We waited three months per our doctor, got pregnant my second cycle after we started trying and had a healthy baby girl last month! I did worry the whole pregnancy, though! Hang in there. I know it's hard, but It will happen for you.
  • I had a d&c and was pregnant within about three months. I am now 37 weeks. I have worried the entire pregnancy, but I have also had three losses so that adds to my stress. Best wishes.
  • Awe...that's exciting, @sswartout, you're practically there! Congratulations!
  • Thank you all for your supportive words and congrats to all that are currently expecting! Thank you for giving me hope and realizing everything will get better!

I had the same, 10wks mmc but had apparently stopped growing after 8. After D&C, Dr said we were good to go as soon as we were mentally ready to try again. Apparently you're at your most fertile after a pregnancy so you shouldn't find it too hard. We waited 3 months before trying again, then ttc for 3 months (only really trying with OPK the last month) and am now 4w1d! Still early but crossing my fingers like hell this time will work out better.

Is this your first child ?
  • Yes first time around. Although our previous pregnancy was somewhat of a surprise baby so we fell pregnant quite easily with that one too.
  • Us too. Exactly the same
  • I've had 2 mmc and 2 d&c's. After the first one I became pregnant 3rd cycle of trying. 2nd loss I became pregnant before my first cycle. The mc's were due to MTHFR. I am still very early 4ish weeks. Praying this is our rainbow baby! Sorry for your loss.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I had a D&C on April 3rd, and got my AF back 42 days later, then it took two cycles to get pregnant again.  Now I am 17+4wks along.

  • First off, I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a missed miscarriage back in March 2015 (baby stopped growing at 7 weeks, but I thought I was 10 weeks) and I had a D&C immediately. My husband and I choose to wait out the summer to start trying again, we wanted to make sure we were emotionally ready to go on this journey again. Thankfully, we started trying again in August and got pregnant right away. I'm currently 10weeks3days, and have had two successfully ultrasounds, but every day I worry.

I am sure everything will work out for you as long as you try and keep a positive outlook!
  • I'm so sorry for your loss, can totally relate but yes there's hope! I had MC the first time at 5 weeks, we conceived again 2 months later but although we initially saw a heartbeat this time around there was nothing at 8 weeks and I had to have a d&c too. My dr advised we wait for one normal period atleast before trying again as you are really fertile after d&c, however I accidentally fell pregnant immediately. After the d&c and didn't even get my period. Unfortunately we lost that also at 5 weeks but my dr said it was most likey due to the fact the lining wasn't ready and it was too soon after the d&c. Some people are successful right after and some aren't but it is best to wait atleast one normal period so that your ovulation and lining can get back to normal. One period later I'm now 12 weeks and 4 days. Still freaking out week by week but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Don't give up.
  • I am so sorry for your loss. I had a D&C September 19, got AF 4 weeks later and am waiting to have another normal period (doctor recommended 2 cycles before trying again). I come into this "room" often and am so happy to read everyone's success stories! It gives me so much hope that our next go round will be successful! Congratulation to everyone on your pregnancies and I hope to join you soon!
  • I had a D&E in July of last year after finding no heartbeat at our 17 week appointment. We waited the recommended one cycle and then tried and conceived 5 months later. Got our BFP in March of this year and now we are 36 weeks pregnant with a baby boy. It's been a good pregnancy with no complications but always nerve wracking. Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • I had my first successful pregnancy after I had a d&c following a missed mc (also had a mc about 9 months before that one). It took two weeks. I was shocked and scared. So my experience with it was positive. I hope you have the same!

  • I know it's stressful I had two miscarriages the last one I had a dnc after and I had taken chlomid to conceive so after the dnc I wasn't really trying (meaning decided not to do fertility meds and was deciding if I wanted to risk another loss and heartbreak didn't think I could get pregnant without chlomid), and I got pregnant 8 months later to my shock and I am now almost 39 weeks with a sweet little baby boy!!!I worried this while pregnancy so that part never goes away after losing pregnancies...i feel that the dnc may have helped clean my body out and prepare it better but everyone is different. There is hope I wish you the best!
  • I had a D&C on June 19th and got my first period afterwards on July 27th. My doctor told me we were allowed to start trying after that cycle. It took me a couple months to feel emotionally ready to actively try again and I just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant, so it took us roughly 3-4 months after my first period to get pregnant. Good luck mama!
  • I have had two miscarriages this year one in March with one D&C then again in August when I was 10wks and the ultrasound showed no heartbeat. The second miscarriage I had 3 D&Cs, which was torture and emotionally draining. My Dr recommended that I wait two periods until I try again... Which I did and I am now 6 weeks today. I'm freaking out though because I'm cramping like crazy. Does anyone else know if cramps are more severe during pregnancy after having recent D&Cs? Has anyone experienced this and had a good outcome? I'm trying not to stress, but it's obviously not working.
  • Sorry for your loss. My husband and I found out at our 12 week appointment that our baby's heart had stopped beating at 9 1/2 weeks. I had a d&c on September 17th of this year. I followed the doctors orders and waited 2 periods before trying to conceive again. My husband and I just found out yesterday that I am exactly 3 weeks pregnant. I'm a nervous wreck, but am trying to stay strong and pray for the best. I wish you the best.
