Need help reading Hcg test

Hello,

I received the results of my blood test today and I'm confused. I've taken 3 at home pregnancy tests, 2 negative and 1 positive. My results show a level reading, so I'm assuming I am pregnant, but I'm confused where it says non pregnant female.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help reading Hcg test

  • As far as I know that means that the HCG level in a non pregnant female is less than 5. Hope that helps.

From what I can tell it says ur hcg was 4829. If u go straight off the legend it provides, it says u are between 2-4 weeks pregnant. I can see where the confusion was though- the way they spaced out the legend and ur actual result was really confusing. Also I'm super surprised ur doc didn't call u to explain the results to u
  • I have to wait until Tuesday to see my doctor. I'm just impatient. I received notification that my results were available online, so I looked.
  • I totally understand the impatience! I'm the same way. Don't quote me on anything but from what I can see it looks like good news :-)
  • I would say it looks like good news too!

On an unrelated not, (Not trying to hijack the thread) but isn't gestational age measured from last period? How is it within normal bounds for someone have an HcG of 50 at a week before ovulation? Or by gestational age do they mean weeks since ovulation?
  • I have no clue, that's why I asked for other's insight. I'm hoping it's good news, and thanks your your input everyone! :)

To me, it looks like you're 4-6 weeks pregnant (assuming they meant weeks since ovulation, not gestational age) but I am not a medical professional, I am just going off of my own HcG testing.
  • You're definitely pregnant! Hcg levels vary substantially from one person to the next, so right now, you should use LMP as your dating, until you get an ultrasound which will be more accurate.

It says "Female (Non Pregnant) < 5" because that is what the range is for a woman that is not pregnant.  It's just to give you an idea of what the numbers mean in regards to someone that wouldn't be pregnant.  It's not saying you aren't pregnant.

Edit: I work for a health system, and this is one of the issues with a non-medical person reading a medical chart.  It's great to have access to your medical information, but lots of times people don't know how to read things like this or may read something incorrectly. It's perfectly evident to a medical professional what this means, but i can see how this may be confusing to someone that doesn't normally read these.

  • The less than 5 is just stating that means not pregnant as a guide. Your level is over 4000 so that would assume you are well into 2-3 weeks pregnant by the results window.
