Contractions?!

I'm a FTM and I'm a little over 27 weeks. The past few days I've been having a lot more braxton hicks (multiple an hour), pressure in my lower abdomen and back, slight cramps, and an overall feeling like I just worked out & breathlessness just from simple tasks. Just wondering if this is normal? Anything helps- thanks!

My midwife said that if I had more than 4 an hour and drinking water and putting my feet up doesn't help, I need to go in to get checked out. At 27 weeks it can never hurt to go get checked!

    Edited because words are hard.

  • Rest and drink some water, and hopefully it'll go away. Either way, definitely worth mentioning to the doc!

There have been a couple posts on Braxton hicks that might give more info.
  • For me, I was removed from work at 28 weeks during my first pregnancy due to activity and stress related contractions. Basically, if I was on my feet, I was having regular contractions. If I sat/laid down, they would stop. At my job, I'm on my feet all day, every day. Light duty isn't really an option. My son still had to be induced after his due date...
Now with this pregnancy, I've been having contractions for about 5 weeks already (I'm at 28+4). Again, they are regular if I'm on my feet. I have an OB appointment tonight, so we will see if I'm going to be allowed to continue working.
So, are contractions this early considered "normal," probably, but to an extent. Are they problematic, not necessarily. Don't panic yourself, and always contact your doctor if you're unsure or uncomfortable about the situation! Drink lots of water and relax as much as possible!

I think whether it is normal depends on the person, so please be sure to talk to your OB about it. What you describe is pretty normal for me at this point. I'm also at high risk for preterm labor and am being monitored closely.

  • I ended up with 3 months of actual non-progressive contractions for my first. If you are having regular contractions, go in. They will monitor and do an ultrasound and what-have-you to see if you are in pre-term labor or just unlucky like me. Honestly, if you are having more than 4 an hour, I'd go in and get checked out.
