Feeling discouraged.

Sorry if it's s repost I couldn't find anything answering my question. My baby boy arrived Monday night the first time I tried nursing he did pretty well. But now things kind of hurt. I help him open wide enough to get a good latch but it still feels like a pinching sensation and it's uncomfortable. Is it just the newness and will it get better? I was given a good nipple cream so I'm not chaffing, but they are sensitive. Please tell me my nipples will adapt and it will get better. It's only been a couple days so I hope it does.

Re: Feeling discouraged.

  • Try calling your pediatrician to see if they can recommend a lactation consultant. We're lucky to have two in our ped's office and they have been so helpful. In the hospital all the nurses kept commenting on DD's awesome latch, so even though it was painful I thought everything was fine. It got bad so I made a lactation appointment, and they gave me great advice and support and a prescription for an ointment that saved my nipples. If it's uncomfortable for you now, you could probably use some help!

  • The people that say it doesn't hurt if you have the right latch are not always right. I went to several lactation consultants for DD and she had a perfect latch, but it hurt so bad still! The good news is that the pain is definitely temporary. It will take a few weeks maybe even a month to get there, but soon it will be painless. Keep going mama! You're doing a beautiful thing for your LO and it is so so so worth it! You can do this!!!
  • Hey mama.
Yes this is normal, for the first 3 weeks or so it will hurt.
Give yourself 3 weeks before u throw in the towel.
If u can have ur de prescribe
APNO (all purpose nipple ointment-cream not gel) it will help. It's a formula that the pharmacy has to mix.
It will be ur life saver. Apply after every feed to ur nipples. It gets absorbed so don't worry and even if baby ingests a bit, I've been told it's safe.
In the meanwhile make sure baby is latched ok and if u need to go to the lac consultant , go.
If baby latches wrong, even if eating take it out and try agin. Do it do u get the right latch-better for u and baby in the long run.
  • The lac consultant at the hospital gave me a visit and was helpful. i thought if I wasn't feeling much he wasn't doing anything but she showed me the signs of what to look for and so even when there was minimal discomfort he was still doing it correctly. It's all so overwhelming these first few days!
  • Yes. 5 kids now and it always hurts for the first few weeks. I know we have the right latch - I've spent 4 years of my life nursing kids already, but it still hurts in the beginning.
  • I found it was always helpful to put nipple cream on before and after every feeding, and before and after taking a shower. It's a pain to do it so often but it's really worth it!
  • It always feels sore at first. Just make sure baby has a good latch so you don't get any blisters or sores and i promise you as time goes on it will get easier and painless.
