Membrane sweep at 40 weeks

I'm 40 weeks today (Oct. 20th) doctor wants to do a membrane sweep tomorrow morning to see if it'll jump start closer contractions/active labor.....anyone ever try this and it be successful?? I can't be induced due to a previous c-section, I'm trying for a vbac with thus one ;-) she says I'm a great candidate!!

Re: Membrane sweep at 40 weeks

  • My doctor did a membrane sweep last Thursday at 39 weeks.  I lost my mucous plug over the weekend, but no contractions yet.  I have been bounding on my birthing ball ever since, really hoping that labor gets started on its own this time around.
Good luck!  I hope it helps to get things going for you!

  • I had a membrane sweep at 39w6d and again at 40w5 days and while I did have some contractions unfortunately did put me over the edge. I do know people it has worked for, good luck to you!
  • I've had two so far. I'm still pregnant.
  • I haven't even had a cervical exam, but I am considering a sweep at my next appointment! Good luck, let us know if it worked!
  • I had one at 40+1 and came to the hospital this afternoon (40+6) after laboring at home for a few hours, was able to get to a 5. After the sweep I started losing my MP in pieces each day. Last night & today it started getting bloody. Was it the sweep that put me in labor? Not sure. But it did seem to help things out a bit. I was scheduled for induction Thursday night... So glad labor happened on its own. (Laying in bed now with an epidural, about a 7 or 8.)
  • I had mine done on the 8th and lost my plug that night. My water broke the next night after 2 days of regular contractions, but too far apart to go in.

I thought your ment to go in if your water brakes anyway because it can cause an infection
  • @indylardelli sorry my response was pretty unclear. I had contractions all day Thursday (morning appointment) and Friday with my water breaking Friday night. But the contractions alone weren't close enough for me to go in for them, by Friday evening I was actually sure they were going to stall out completely. We went in for my water breaking and little bug came out 12 hours later. Although I still spiked a fever after 9 or 10 hours.

The short point was it appears to have worked for me but it could have been a coincidence.
  • They say with a membrane sweep 1 out of 8 do not need to be induced. :)
  • Had my membrane sweep this morning, so far contractions all day...but the closest were 6-8min apart!! Here's hoping they stay that way :-)

Curious what your source on this was? I am a little concerned about a membrane sweep because I think I've heard it can cause your water to break right away as the doctor/midwife does it. I don't want to start the clock so to speak by having my water potentially break too early.
  • I am 40 weeks today and going in for my sweep at 2pm. I am so excited and hopeful that it will work and I am FINALLY having my baby boy this weekend!!! Fingers and toes crossed
  • I'm 40w today, too, and hoping to be dilated enough for a membrane sweep at this morning's appt. I read that a second sweep is more likely to induce labor, so if it doesn't work, I'll be making another appt on Monday!

  • Hey ladies. I'm 40 weeks and 5 days. I had a sweep at 38 weeks 3 days and again at 40 weeks 3 days .... NOTHING.
Hope u all have better luck.
  • Just had my sweep....ouch!!!!! Nothing so far, just feeling uncomfortable from it but no contractions :-(((
  • Just had one, too! Another scheduled for Monday. I'm just having back cramps. Induction on the books for 8 days from now. Obviously, hoping to go into labor soon!

  • I just had my third membrane sweep this morning. I've had terrible back pain and cramps since 10:30pm last night. Hopeful that this membrane sweep from today does something! Otherwise induction scheduled for next Wednesday night.
  • I've had two membrane sweeps, going in for a third tomorrow morning- so far they haven't done anything. I'm scheduled to induce Sunday night.
