How long does your SO get for leave? If any?

My wife doesn't qualify for FMLA at her company due to a merger that happened and department changes, even though she's been there 5 years. Such a bummer.

She's got 8 paid vacation days and that's it. She's taking 10 days, so two are unpaid and hoping to extend it to the first Monday so it depends on what day baby is born when she goes back to work.

We had thought she'd get unpaid FMLA so saved for that but it won't work out.

How many days/weeks/months will your DH or SO be home with you!

  • My husband gets 3 weeks paid paternity but are you sure she doesn't qualify for fmla? A merger shouldn't make that go away unless her company is under 50 employees...

They merged three companies and moved her position to one of the new companies operations so she has only been there 10 months. She has looked into it at every angle.

    It's a huge national corporation.
  • SO can only take unpaid leave if he chooses to use more than his vacation time. He has a weeks vacation save so he'll be using that starting the day I go into labor
  • My DH gets one week unpaid.. He also works at restaurant.. So I guess that's not too bad.
  • My hubby gets 6 weeks full paid to use anytime within baby's first year. Makes me jealous! I'll get 12 weeks off but only 4wks at 60% pay is my company's fmla coverage
  • My SO just got a new job about 2.5 months ago, so he doesn't qualify for FMLA yet. They are being understanding/flexible about the situation though, so they will let him take a few days, maybe a week, probably unpaid. They said play it by ear. My mom will be here for the first week though, so I won't be completely alone at first.
  • Mine will take a week.
  • DH gets 2 weeks paid, that's all he'll be taking off.
  • Hubby gets 3 days BUT we saved a weeks vacation to add to that.

My hubby saved up 2 weeks vacation time, he will take it as soon as I go into labor. With our first he took it starting from my due date and she didn't come until 42 weeks and a day. He ended up able to work from home for a few days, but used all his vacation time just waiting around. I wish they offered paid paternity leave, he's all I have.

Edit* He works salary so I guess it would technically be paid! But it's still vacation time we could be using for an actual vacation!
  • We plan for him to take 3 weeks totally off starting the day she gets here and then doing a flex schedule with a few days of work from home for the next few weeks after that. It's super important to him to not have to miss the first weeks of our daughter's life, and he shouldn't have to. Its a shame more people don't have these options in the U.S. it makes me so sad.

My husband just left his job in January that offered 3 wks paid paternity leave...for a company where he doesn't even accrue PTO this year, much less paternity leave! Its ok though, he'll be allowed to take a week unpaid and they'll be flexible with his comings and goings (he can work some at home)

Its a much better job, so it is worth it. He was with one of the big 4 accounting firms, so I'm glad he'll be working 60 hr weeks super close to home rather than 80-100 hr weeks with variable travel! Some things are better than money :)
  • DH owns a seasonal business that doesn't really operate from November-March with summer being the busiest time. I'm a SAHM. Let's just say this baby is coming at the best time of year for him!

  • My husband also is a small business owner and can't work during December-March. He will take work off while I'm in the hospital and for a day or two after the baby is born. Then he is going to try to be a stay at home dad during his off season if he can afford it and if he doesn't go stir crazy.
  • He only has his 2 personal days. :( And then he's taking his vacation soon. Hopefully the baby is here by then.

I also own a seasonal business and our baby was planned so that I'd be a SAHM during my slow season which is November to March as well (periodic work in February otherwise just emails and some easy things I can do from home.) I own a summer camp.
  • My husband works for his father at their family business. It's extremely flexible. He won't get paid for any time off, but can take as much as he needs. He plans to take a week off unpaid, but will take 1-2 more if needed.
  • My hubbys company doesn't pay the best but has great benefits. He gets 4 weeks paid paternity and also has 5 more vacation days he can take. He is also going to work from home once a week after the 4 weeks is over. I'm so happy we will be able to spend the first few weeks as a new family together.
  • Wow I feel really good then my hubby gets 12 weeks full pay and I am a stay at home mom..
  • Hubby is taking one week vacation. If he used all vacation he could apply for full, 12 weeks unpaid but we are saving days for Dr's appts and holidays at the end of the year instead. Crazy how much variation there is on what people are given for this same major life change....

  • DH is an RN and because he works PRN at two different hospitals, he doesn't get PTO. LO came last Wednesday and he was able to take off the night she was born and stay with us, then he had to go back the next night, so my mom stayed at the hospital with me. It's not ideal, but starting Wednesday he has his schedule worked out where he has a week off, which will be nice!
  • My husband gets 10 days paternity leave but also has over 60 leave days that are paid as well saved up.
  • My husband only gets maybe 3 days :( really bummed about that. He switched dealerships( toyota mechanic) back in May and he won't have any sick pay or PTO for a year, which I think it's dumb you have to wait a whole year! So we are hoping he comes on a Tuesday or Wednesday and he will just have the rest of the week off.
  • No paid leave, but we saved PTO, so he's taken 2 weeks (goes back on Wednesday). However, we both work from home, so he'll still be here. Even though he won't be helping, I know it's going to be so much easier for him to go back than it was with DS1. He missed us so much and now he'll get to see us during the day.

  • My husband CAN take more time off but it would be unpaid... we need SOME sort of income so it's unrealistic. He has 2 weeks worth of sick time but can only use 1 week consecutively. He'll just take off that one week, use sick days here and there whenever baby and I are having a rough day of it and just look forward to the holidays. He'll have a couple days off around Thanksgiving and he has 2 full weeks off paid at Christmas.

My husband doesn't get any since he hasn't been there a year yet, but several of his coworkers signed up to cover his shifts so he'll get a little over a week.
  • My husband and I work for the school system. Today we found out that we only can use 12 FMLA weeks between the two of us....news to me
  • My husband gets 6 weeks through FMLA, but he works for his grandfather so he can really take as long as he wants.
  • My husband is self employed and works from home. Baby will be here next Wednesday, he will be off the rest of that week, and half the next. So basically just a week.

Fortunately he works from home, so it won't be so bad. Plus his coworkers understand I won't be able to drive and he will have to go get DD from preschool each morning.

I think it'll be okay. Honestly, with DD, after being home for 3-4 days, he was bored at home not working. So he went back at least part time.

  • DH got no time off or FMLA. He took 1 day off cuz DS was in NICU.

  • DH is taking off beginning the day we go into the hospital and then using his accrued sick time to take the next 2.5 weeks off. He's a teacher so it is thankfully paid, and he has the holiday breaks coming up.
  • DH gets 2 weeks of paid paternity leave. He took off the week we were in the hospital and will be taking paternity leave once I go back to work so we can keep LO out of daycare a bit longer.
  • My husband gets 4 weeks paid paternity leave, separate from any of his personal vacation time he's accrued.

We've very lucky with this, we realize. He's been with the company for years and it's a huge one that can do this for their employees.

I just feel like it's so silly that I myself get no paid maternity leave (have to use up my sick days) but he does!
  • With my 2nd daughter DH had 2 weeks paid paternity then was allowed to use any personal time he had saved up. But with this one, he recently got promoted to a supervisor so he will be home here and there but not straight days or weeks. I'm hoping he is able to just take some mornings off and get my oldest up and on the bus while I recover, that'd be helpful. But he works about an hr and a half away so I may be relying on family more this time (which I feel very thankful to have at our expense)

This stinks! That doesn't seem right that you have to break it up. 1st off you're giving birth and should get more time and secondly you should be treated as 2 individuals when it comes to fmla. Not a couple. I've never heard of this.
  • My son was born oct 14, my boyfriend left oct 16 th for 2 weeks straight on a boat with no cell service and little to no communication :( ! I hate it !!
  • My husband will get two weeks paid paternity leave through his union and then is free to use any accrued vacation days as well. He works nights, so having him home during this time will be special for all of us, especially our 4 year old son. My husband drives him to preschool three days per week and the other days we will keep him home and spend that time as a new family of four.
  • My husband is taking 3 weeks paid family medical leave. It will be a huge help as this is our 3rd child. I'm so thankful his job allows for it.
  • DH has been with his company for 10 years.  While he doesn't get paternity leave, he has 5 weeks of paid vacation a year.  He took 2 weeks off and just went back to work yesterday.  He's also taking a week off at Thanksgiving, 1.5 weeks off at Christmas, and a week off in January because his mom will be coming over from Europe.
  • My husband doesn't get paid paternity leave but he has FMLA and is using his vacation time. He is taking 4 weeks.
