Medication while pregnant

Hi Ladies,

I just wanted to see if anyone else is taking medication while pregnant. I didn't have to the first time around, but now I do and it really bothers me. I have chronic urticaria (hives) that started when DS was 6 months old, out of the blue, so if I don't take Zantac 150 and Zyrtec every single night, I am covered in hives the next morning. Doctor has given the okay, since both medications are safe for pregnancy but I can't shake feeling incredibly guilty for taking the medicine.

Anyone else feel this way?

I took and am currently taking blood pressure medication. I took it from the start of both pregnancies because my BP is slightly elevated, I'm on the lowest possible dose and will continue even after delivery. I was nervous the first few months last time, but my doctors and I discussed the potential outcomes if my BP happened to skyrocket and I wasn't on medication, so I felt the benefits outweighed any concerns. Coincidentally I also had heartburn a ton in the third trimester and lived on Zantac, it's approved and was such a relief.

Do what's best for you and if your doctor says it's ok, then don't feel guilty for taking good care of yourself!

Thank you. It's so hard to not feel guilty when I took barely anything the first time around. At least I'm not alone in having to take something!

I take a daily prescription med for Acid Reflux/GERD. Both my primary doc and my OB felt that it would be better to remain on this than to take me off of it. Originally, I did feel guilty, but now it hardly ever crosses my mind. It's definitely a tough thing. I also think it's normal to feel guilty because as moms we are always putting our kids before us and trying to do what is best for them.

That is so true. We definitely do try to put our LO's first all the time.

I am continuing to take my allergy and asthma medication while pregnant. I've already had some flare-ups so it's important to both mine and the baby's health that I stay on my medication. All has been approved by my doctor. And I trust my asthma specialist 100% as I have been a patient of his since I was 6 and he hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Don't feel guilty about it. As long as your doc has said its safe then you have nothing to worry about. I understand why you would feel like that though, I'm a pharmacist and even knowing things are safe I'm still hesitant to use them. I think knowing there are so many harmful things out there, you always want to make sure you're doing the right thing by your little one. Pregnancy is hard enough on our bodies without the added extras of things like allergies, colds and chronic medical conditions. Just gotta do the best we can!!

In the case of PP with asthma, studies suggest that poorly controlled asthma is far worse for the baby (low birth weight, preterm delivery) than any potential side effects of the inhalers you might be using. Always important to consider things like that!

Don't feel guilty.  I too take zyrtec and had to take zyrtec d when my husband got pneumonia and i got sick too.  Im only a few weeks ahead of you but baby is doing great per my doctor.   Sometimes the pros outweigh the itty bitty possible cons. My OB office even laughed at them not giving me a certain antibiotic when i got sick and had to call me in phenegren when i had some terrible tummy bug a few weeks ago.  You are doing what your doctor says and that's all you can do.  Moms got to be healthy too!

You've gotta do whatever keeps you healthy. I also take Zyrtec daily along with Zofran every 8 hours. It's either that or starvation/ dehydration.
