Baby sleeping with blanket.

The cold weather is about to rear its ugly head. Actually it's only 30 degrees here now. I was wondering when it's ok for baby to sleep with a blanket. I've read so many different thing, some say not until 12 months, ask pediatrician, or when baby can crawl and had strong head movement. Some also say a crochet blanket or something that is light and breathable. I dress her pretty warm but sometimes I feel like she needs a blanket here and there. She still sleeps in the room with me so I pretty much hear every move she make. Still worried and not sure what to do. Any opinions? Advice?

Re: Baby sleeping with blanket.

  • We switched from a blanket to a sleep sack once he started pulling the blanket over his face! A sleep consultant near us had a scare with her son using a blanket while under 12m as he rolled and tossed and turned enough to wrap the blanket around his neck and prevent him from breathing. Luckily she had a video monitor and caught it before he stopped breathing fully.

  • We use blankets, have done since the beginning. Midwives told us to just make sure they're tucked in tight.
  • We use sleep sacks and with the weather getting colder we recently switched to the thicker "winter" sleep sack (we already had flurries here this weekend!) As my LO has started to roll in his sleep I feel much more comfortable with the sleep sack and ensure the temp in the house remains at room temperature. Here is the one we use: https://www.halosleep.com/halo-sleepsack-winter-weight-blue-penguin/
  • We've been using blankets since he was out of his swaddle.. 4 months. I don't use heavy blankets, just the light one and he sleeps in long sleeve/long leg onesie. He doesn't move a lot in his sleep and the time he did cover up his head with the blanket he started screaming and woke me up. We haven't had any problems and we keep our house around 68/69 degrees year round
  • I also use a halo sleep sack. I will probably wait until she's over 12 months to start using a blanket since she really seems to be just fine with the sleep sack. She rolls around too much now and hasn't started crawling yet; I would not feel comfortable using a blanket.
  • I just started using a blanket about 2 weeks ago. I put a short sleeve onsie on then the sleep n play over top. Terry or fleece. I have a crib blanket. Its not really big, I put that on her just up to the waist. My LO sleeps in her crib in our room.  I do have the monitor on her as well. I can hear everything of course and when I do I check the monitor. She usually kicks the blanket off or rolls over and the blanket comes off.
  • I cover my 6 month old with a light blanket. I have a monitor on my nightstand so any movement or sound I am pretty attuned to. No worries here. My baby moves around a lot so most of the time it ends up on the other side of the crib anyway lol.
