High-Risk Pregnancy

Need Surgery

Hi,
So I need surgery for Crohns Disease. This was a surprised pregnancy and so the doctors said I have an option to have surgery in the 2nd trimester (3 weeks away). The risk is low but still a risk. When I had my first C-section I almost died from the narcotics so they don't want to do the surgery now. However, if I don't I know that my third trimester will be nothing but pain and then my window closes. I need my paycheck so I was hoping to go through until the end of the pregnancy. I am so torn, do I take the risk or just the hit to the paycheck and go on leave from the third trimester? I just don't know the right answer. I wanted the surgery so I could be healthy for the full pregnancy but I have a higher risk of loss due to my history under narcotics. Sorry, I just had to put this out there.

  • What do both of your doctors recommend?

  • I agree with @PlainJane8350 - defer to your doctors on this as they will be able to understand if the benefit outweighs the risk. Also, just my opinion, but please don't risk you or the baby over a paycheck.
  • My OB says to do it in the second trimester, the surgeon and gastroenterologist are not comfortable with it during pregnancy. The high risk is ok in second trimester. Oh, and the paycheck would never stop me, I was just giving the whole scenario. In the end, and after my struggle with this disease, money is just paper. I would love to have more but life is too precious to worry about small things. My husband is just afraid if I have the surgery and lose the baby I will never forgive myself and be in a bad place mentally, but hates seeing me in so much pain. I am afraid I have the surgery, lose the baby and my husband is mad at me or we can't recover from it. Just so many factors. I am going to speak with my gastroenterologist and see if when it gets too much if she will pull me from work. I apologize for the drama in this. Just wanted to hear what other people thought, I guess to justify my decision even though I have not decided yet but really have. ugh! I also suggested to my husband to speak with someone to just help us rationalize the fear and stress so it doesn't wear us down.
    Thanks for listening.
  • Your surgeon isn't comfortable doing the surgery so I would never allow them to operate. My Aunt has Crohns and I'm so sorry you will be in so much pain but I would wait until after pregnancy
