June 2016 Moms

Is 8 weeks truly 8 weeks?

Hi June moms,
If we measure from the first date of our last cycle, does our week by week baby estimate hold true? My 1st OB appt is this week- estimated at 7w5d.

I'm a first timer (And a complete rookie) ☺️
Thanks for the help!

Re: Is 8 weeks truly 8 weeks?

  • By "week by week baby estimate" I assume you mean the size of the baby (like how TB calls it a "blueberry," etc.)?

It's true--as long as you ovulated on day 14 of your cycle, which is considered "typical" (although it's really not). Technically, the first two weeks of your pregnancy, you're not really pregnant at all. But since it's a lot harder to know what day you ovulated than the first day of your last period, that's an easier way to date the pregnancy.

It's entirely possible that your pregnancy is different and you could be farther along or a little behind. If your OB does an early u/s, then you can find out for sure. If your cycles are usually much longer or shorter than the "average" 28 days, then you might want to discuss the possibility of an early u/s with your doctor. I had an early u/s last pregnancy and I'm really glad, because my DD's due date ended up being 2 weeks later than the EDD just based on the start of my last cycle.

I'm not sure I exactly answered your question but I hope that was helpful. :) Congrats, by the way!

  • Everything has a little wiggle room of plus or minus 3-4 days.
  • Not necessarily. Unless you confirmed ovulation with opk, temping, or ultrasound its tough to say how big your lo is. For example if i went off lmp I would be due June 9th. I know that I'm due June 25th though because I ovulated much later than cycle day 14. Until your dating ultrasound it would be hard to guess, even those can be off by about a week. Good luck.
  • U will have a much more accurate date when u do ur ultrasound and get all the measurements. But generally, if u how off lmp u will be pretty close (maybe off by a few days)--unless u have really irregular cycles
  • I know when I ovulated, so I will let my OB know when they try to date me off of LMP/size give or take a few days.

That doesn't always work either.  Last time we were TTC for quite a bit so I was all over tracking my ovulation.  My due date based on ultrasound was 11 days later.  I was out of town immediately after so I know when we DTDed fo sho.

Temping and OPKs.  I love data.  :D  Also, for 13 months I ovulated on the same day of the cycle (day 17) and it lined up again that month.  I have a theory that implantation took longer than usual.  I googled and google says it's a thing, so.... totally legit.  In all seriousness, I have no clue, but I have a sweet baby girl who measured on track with that later date the whole pregnancy and I KNOW when we conceived.  I also delivered at 36w5d and I thought, maybe she wasn't as early and it was really 11 days earlier.  But, she had all the common issues a baby who was born at 36 and 5 would have.  So, after all THAT (you still reading?) I decided I am overthinking it.  Due dates are so broad.  My sweet girl is healthy and thriving.  This baby will come when it comes and I'll be READY.

Very interesting. I've never heard of that before. Thanks for sharing!

Again, I might be making crap up.  But it makes sense to me!  Fun fact: I never had a BFP on a HPT.  I was like 5 days late and all negative.  Went to the RE to get my cycle started with progesterone and had an HCG of 8.5.  They were all, "You're not pregnant, but you're not not pregnant."  We kept testing, it kept rising!  <3

Any chance you'd like to share your chart? It's sounds like an interesting chart :).

  • I really like reading all these posts. Seeing different experiences.
The only thing I am truly following is the fact that a due date is just an estimate. Already my mind is getting on hooked on that specific date and it's not how it works.

I have a friend who kept saying "oh I still have 15 weeks!" And then "oh I have plenty of time! Still 8 weeks away!" Well her baby girl arrived 3 weeks early (plus her EDD was just going off her LMP) and suddenly she and her husband were running around like crazy because they kept thinking they had "plenty of time left".

Anyway, just chiming in. Don't get hooked on a date as a kind of "due date" that you can put things off because there's still time. These dates are just an estimate.

Yep, I agree with this! I went into labor at 36+6 with DS and had him the next day at 37. I know this isn't the norm, but it happens!

Yeah, I just want to be very mindful not to look at the EDD as an actual set date. It's not like a paper due for school, hahaha. No procrastinating! Lol. My friend kept saying how she had so much time left, when the baby arrived early, they were caught so off guard their parents had to go buy a car seat! And all the nursery furniture, while it was there, it was all still in boxes. They hadn't put it together because "they had plenty of time left" hahaha.
Also she chose to have her baby shower really late, and almost missed it! Her baby was born two days after the baby shower!
She kept seeing her EDD as a definite.

  • @cattlebride I was super old school and did them on paper with a pencil.  This was 2013.  Don't still have them!
