4 week old-tongue is white- is this normal? Pic included

My baby's tongue is white. Is this thrush or from milk? I don't know how long it has been like that but it doesn't seem to be going away. He gets breastmilk by the bottle in day and formula at night. If it is thrush what do they do for it? Do I need to rush out and take him to the doctor?

My baby had thrush also. The pedi said if it doesn't wipe away its thrush, if you can wipe it off its milk. And usually milk will be just on the tongue, thrush can be on the tongue but will spread to other parts of the mouth. For thrush they'll give you something like nystatin cream to treat it. Thrush is a yeast infection. So for me we got two tubes of nystatin cream and were told to apply it twice a day. You can use a q-tip or wrap a piece of gauze on your finger and spread it around the mouth. Personally I liked using the gauze it was easier for me.

  • Kind of looks like it.. am currently treating my LO for thrush with nyastin I just had to call the pedi didnt have to go in for an appt and they called it in. Like PP stated if it wipes away it is milk if not probably is thrush. If you are breastfeeding don't forget to treat yourself as you can pass it back and forth (I just applied her medication on my nipples as this is what her pedi told me to do)
  • Looks like thrush. My guy has it too. Got nystatin liquid for his mouth. He also had a yeast diaper rash, so watch for that. It was a rash - not particularly bad - that just wouldn't go away. Didn't get worse and didn't look horrid. Got special prescription cream and it went away within hours (but continue to do cream for a week so it is truly gone).

  • My little one had thrush at 2 weeks they gave me a drop for a mouth that helped her tongue but stayed on her cheeks so then they gave me gel. It went off her cheeks within a couple of days but it's still on her tongue. Every dummy and bottle gets sterilised but it just seems to still be there. Looks like another trip to the doctors next week. Its not hurting her as much as it was before the gel I do have to say. She would start gagging on bottles and wake up screaming but that's stopped now x
  • Putting coconut oil on the bottle nipple helped my LO thrush. With my first I just bought a toddler toothbrush or they have ones that go on your finger and brush it off.
  • My babes tongue is stained white, I was told if it's only on the tongue it's more than likely milk, if it's other places in the mouth then it's thrush
  • Since day four LO has had a white tongue. At her two week appointment the doctor couldn't wipe it off and prescribed medicine for thrush. After using it for a few days we still hadn't gotten rid of it and her tongue is still white. I was also treating myself. I don't know what is going on.

  • We have thrush and the only indication was a diaper rash and stinging pain in my breasts. I use newmans ointment and a&d on his bottom.
