ITCHY!?!

The palms of my hands and soles of my feet are itching like crazy!! There is no rash just insane itching. Any ideas of what could cause it? I've been taking benedryl but no relief.

Re: ITCHY!?!

  • I have had this with other pregnancies (not this one) and never thought to ask about it! Curious myself. I never took anything for it, but I remember rubbing my palms and feet with a hairbrush.

Palms and feet itching is all due to ICP (has to do with liver) or PUPPS (sp?). Shouldn't be serious and more annoying than anything but I would let your doctor know.

  • My palms and soles itch like crazy too. But I know mine isn't pregnancy related because I've had it for about 6 months. I've started to realize that it happens when I get overheated or my blood pressure is high.
As soon as I cool down, it gets better.

  • Weird, I'll have to look up ICP. Mine started before my first pregnancy also, but went away and since it never returned outside of pregnancy I assumed randomness the first time and pregnancy related the others. One of my friends had PUPPPS and I thought it was more on her neck, belly, and trunk, but it was ages ago and we were in different states so I'm probably misremembering. Off to google I go haha!

  • Doesn't sound like PUPPS. I had it and it comes with a rash that starts on your stomach and spreads to your chest, legs, and arms. I never had it on the palms of my hands or soles of my feet so I don't think that's what it is.

  • I use coconut oil, or nivea cream.

Lately its my left leg- I have a plate and screws in there holding my bones together, so I'm not sure if pregnancy is causing an allergic reaction to the plate?  Titanium is supposed to be hypoallergenic..but from what I read there can be an extremely rare metal allergy.

  • Dehydrated? I get this itchy sensation over my body. It goes away after I drink more water and pee. Probably it's just me. :-S

Not sure what is the cause of your itching; but for symptom management, this is a life saver for itchy feet!  You can get it a Wal-Mart, Walgreens, or pretty much any large drugstore for fairly cheep.  I imagine it would work on your palms as well, you'll just smell mentholated.  ;)

  • This is an all the time issue for me, any time my hands or feet get cold, they itch so bad I'm clawing at them and rubbing them on carpet. I've found soaking them in water so hot it turns them red helps. I just run the water in the tub and sit on the rim and put my hands and feet in. A 5-10 minute soak and they stop itching.
  • I went to the dermatologist for itchiness. My palms get really red and itchy and I get bumps/hives in areas that get bad. Looks like ezcema bumps.

It's most severe on my hands and palms and arms but I also have had it show up on my breath (often), stomach (constant), back, neck, and hips.

It's probably some reaction to the hormones and could be exzema or possibly PUPPP (she didn't want to call it that so early one). Cerave lotion was recommended and has been helpful (more than the anti itch gel she prescribed).

It's been happening for about a month and won't go away.
  • Glad I have a doctors appointment next Monday. Regardless I planned to bring up the itchiness, but now I want to ask about ICP.

Did you ever have your labs done for ICP? I'm getting my blood work don't in a few minutes.
  • My friend had obstetric cholestasis while pregnant. I don't know the details, but i know her dr had a hard time diagnosing it. It's the same as icp. I know it caused a bunch of precautions and some issues, related or may not have been. My friend said around 20-25 weeks is when the flare ups start with it. I would def bring it up and be persistent about looking into this, my friend said most people have c-section with it because of other things associated with the problem aside from itching mean that baby needs out a little early..?? My friend delivered vag against dr suggestion, after 37 week pitocin induction didn't work, they wanted to c section. She declined and induced again a week later and it worked.
  • I just talked to my friend, she said she didn't have a rash with icp unless she scratched at it. Checking your bile salts is what the dr needs to do to rule icp out. Icp is nothing to be alarmed about right now, but if it is that the itching just gets worse and worse. Hers started all over and then her hands and feet became the worst part. She iced her feet to control it- and used Sarna lotion. She added that the induction and attempts to deliver early were due to an increased rate of stillbirths with moms who had icp, and the risk increases as the last weeks pass. She said science behind it is sketchy, but that is how her dr informed her and how they choose to proceed. I don't want to scare you,'I don't know much about this, I just know icp can be serious and I don't want your dr to give you lotion and ignore the problem if there's a chance it's serious. I am on the conservative side as far as medical care, I will add.
  • @charley15 get it checked out! Not sure how long ago your surgery was but my FIL was allergic he started getting issues about 6 weeks after, they removed the titanium about 8 months after the surgery. He had some discolouration and his other symptoms were pain and itchyness. Until then he didn't think he was allergic to anything.
