Baby name question, Too soon? Yes, but I don't care

So there's a girl name that I love, but my husband says that it's too confusing because everyone is going to spell it one of two ways. So please, you tell me: If I have a daughter and she comes up to you and says "Hi my name is 'Mae/May'!" how would you spell it? Thanks! Also, I know I can also post this on baby names- but I know this group better. So I might re post this on there later.

I honestly think that I would think of both, and if I had to spell it for a little kid I would just pick one. But I like Mae better so I voted for that.

I think of Mae Whitman when I hear the name so that's how I think of it as being spelled

Mae. I know a few little girls with this name - Never occurred to me to spell it May.

I actually think of it as Mei, but that's because I work with a chinese woman who spells it that way.  I would have initially gone with May but I agree that I like Mae better and it's not a totally ridiculous weird spelling of a common name (like my cousin did.  Named her daughter Erin, spelled Aeryn, that's a ridiculous spelling).

Really? I feel like Mae is old school (Mae West). I guess it depends on who you relate the name too though I guess.

I like Mae. And I love baby name talk!! Names have always fascinated me. Getting to finally pick a baby name is so incredibly exciting to me!!

On this same topic.... what's everyone opinions on popular names?

One part of me likes the idea of giving my kid a name that is a bit more unique (not Apple / Kal-El unique but still  )  and part of me thinks it's no big deal if it's a popular name. My name is Jessica. Same as most girls born in the 80s. I love my name even though it's not unique so why am I stressing about my kid being one of a few Olivia's or Emma's in her class? Thoughts?

I voted Mae because everyone I've known with that name spelled it that way.  In my experience, it is an old school name.

@Joose159- Popular names are cool because you never have to guess how to spell or pronounce it.  As someone with a non-popular name, I always hated not finding my name on a keychain.  When naming DD, I wanted to be able to call her name at the park and not have three little girls look up at me.  Although, she made the SSA top 40 list, I wanted to steer clear of the top 20.

People don't always know how to spell popular names. DS1 is Jackson. There's a lot of Jacksons and people have decided to spell the name all kinds of "fun" ways. It's also frustrating on the playground to say "Jackson come here" or whatever and have 2 or 3 other kids respond.

I can't stand youneeq names, but I'm not into super mainstream either. I love classic names, DD is Hannah which has always been one of my favorite names

My daughter has a not-uncommon name, but it's spelled a way people don't expect if they're not familiar with Irish surnames (her first name is my mother's last name). I grew up with an uncommon name, so I know from personal experience the years of polite corrections she's facing. Honestly, I think it was good for me. It helped me learn young how to politely correct people, and it made me really aware of spelling other people's names correctly, which I think is something people with easier-to-spell names don't always realize really makes a difference.

I agree. I had to learn the polite subtlety of correcting pronunciation or spelling of my name.  I am super sensitive about getting someone's name right.
