Itching rant!

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow and have had bad itching all of pregnancy but last night it was terrible. I didn't sleep at all and literally rubbed my skin raw from itching. Today is the same thing I can't even function here at work all I can think about is how bad I itch. It's mainly my belly but my arms and legs are bad too. Two weeks ago they ran a test for cholestasis and it came back negative. Now I'm starting to get red bumps on my belly. I called the dr and all they said was to buy Benadryl cream. Has any certain lotion worked for anyone to take away the itch? I'm desperate!

Re: Itching rant!

  • OMG!!!!!!! Finally someone else can relate.I am 39 weeks today and I have been suffering for the past 3 weeks. My calves, my inner thighs, my belly, my palms, hands, and wrists are constantly itching. My doctor's office said the same thing! Negative for cholestasis and told me to use benadryl. UGH! All I've found that works is showering at night in lukewarm water, using aveeno liquid baby soap, then nivea in shower body lotion, then neutrogena body oil when I get out of the shower! This helps temporarily and at least allows me to fall asleep comfortably. But my skin is raw and bleeds and it's so uncomfortable!

  • Is it PUPPP? I got diagnosed with that at my last appointment & I'm 38 weeks.
They gave me some cream & recommended oatmeal baths. Nothing really helps. I have a full body rash, making it hard to sleep. I take benadryl before going to sleep so that I can sleep better but I still wake up in the middle of the night itchy. I get frustrated because I'm tired, itchy, pregnant, and overly emotional. They said it'll go away a week or two after delivery but that doesn't make me feel better because I'm in so much pain now, just wanting to scratch my skin off.
Staying cold helps, like putting ice on it. Stay away from certain fabrics as well; I wear my husband's tanks most days.
  • I had the same issues early on. ..for the first 6 months until the doc prescribed some things. The day i started it all i haven't scratched once since! !! Betnovate ointment is magic. Has to be prescribed and is a steroid. You are supposed to put it on itchy spots... which was all of both my legs and belly and arms... so i lathered it on thick and it was like magic!-however i also used a whole tube in two to three lather up sessions and it's meant to last month's. ... but it was the only thing. I have cool shooters and baths using pinetarsal. It's soap free. You should avoid all soaps- i was skeptical... but it wad good. And.. keep a big tub of sorborlene in the fridge and lather up regularly. .. the cold helps take out the itch and the sorborlene stops the skin getting itchy from dryness. Worth a go! I only use pinetarsal now and would go so far as getting a shampoo/conditioner that aren't soapy because that soap running down your body can cause itch too! I was skeptical because I've always had issues with itchy legs my whole life but in pregnancy i couldn't stand it and had to get home after lunch to strip because the feeling of ANY thing against my skin was awful! ! Now. .no issues at all! Good luck! !
  • I've dealt with this the past two months. It's not pups or chloestasis. Steroids didn't help. Zantac/Zyrtec combo didn't help. The only thing that did was grandpas pine tar soap. Aveenos oatmeal lotion, Sarna lotion, and recently orange juice. I read on another forum that you can drink V8 juice every day and it helps. I cant stomach V8, but I figure it's the acid in the tomatoes that helps. I substituted orange juice and it seems to be working. Just make sure you keep your skin moisturized. It takes some of the itch away and prevents scarring. I'm thinking of trying vitamin e lotion or oil. I too had it on my legs, arms, feet, and belly. It's horrible! Hope you get to feeling better!
  • ive been dealing with the same problem for the past month . i have a rash on the underside of my bump , on my hands and feet . what seems to work for me is keeping my skin clean and washing with an antibacterial soap . so i was in the morning and night in luke warm water . no shower gels . and then lotion and moisturize my skin as soon as i get out the shower . i usually use Vaseline lotion with cocoa butter in it and wash with a soap called safeguard .
  • I had PUPPPS. 6 weeks post partum. Cold showers and gold bond medicated lotion helped. So did pine tar soap. You smell like a campfire but it helps
  • Sounds like puppps. I developed it just in the last week of pregnancy (delivered yesterday). For me, no lotions or anything emollient worked and the only relief came when I kept the rash cool and DRY. The steroid cream the OB prescribed works some, but only in conjunction with keeping the area dry and cool. As soon as I get warm and/or sweaty, I get super itchy again. The worst was having those heart rate monitors strapped to me with goo underneath during labor and delivery!
  • update..........gold bond medicated lotion (green bottle) has been helping tremendously. I have found temporary relief at least for now!!! hope the rest of you ladies are finding something that works.
  • I've been itching but only on my arms. I thought they were mosquito bites until I realized a) it's 50 degrees out and b) no one else in the family had them. The only thing that soothed me was taking a hot bath with tea tree and lavender oil and loading up on my sons eczema lotion
  • I was having the same issue for WEEKS! After trying showering every night, bathing in Curel Itch Defense lotions and Benedryl creme during the day, my doctor suggested (after I cleared all blood tests) I take a Benedryl capsule every night. Not only did it help me sleep, my itching is manageable now!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I had this first trimester for no known reason. UNSCENTED body butter and Claritin were my BFFs.
  • Benadryl cream works, but it doesn't work on large areas. I think it even says so on the bottle. It's more for bug bites or small rashes, not for the entire stomach or leg/a or arm/s. It might have just been the kind I had though..
  • Sounds like Puppps... I had it Pp after my first daughter and just developed it again Pp over the weekend. Pine tar soap. Sensitive Sarna lotion. Tea tree oil. Dandelion root pills and tea. These are the things that help me to manage the itch. It can keep you up at night going crazy scratching so whether you are pregnant or pp, try different things to find some relief! Puppps is the worst!
