Need excuses for not drinking!

Going to a wedding this weekend with lots of friends that know I like to drink - they will be super suspicious when I don't. On top of that I believe that the wedding will be a beer and wine wedding which means I can't even cheat by telling that I am drink something with liquor in it like I did last weekend!! Need inspiration

  • You have a headache and drinking will just dehydrate you and make it worse...

  • Ditto to the beer bottle with water, provided you normally drink beer. Either that or you could say your on a med that doesn't interact well will alcohol, I believe there a few antibiotics that work well for that.
  • What @mkemommy said. Or just carry one bottle around with you all night and "nurse" it without actually sipping anything. That's what I did at a family party last weekend :)

Yep - went to a party last weekend and had the same beer in my hand the whole night. I poured a bit down the sink when I went to the bathroom so it wasn't full but no one was looking to see if I was drinking out of it - there was the assumption that I was.
  • I was also going to suggest the antibiotic thing. Which is accurate because some do say don't drink. If they ask why the need for antibiotic I would be vague and hint at a tmi. People will leave you alone then hahaha.

Either way, hope you have fun!

  • I third the antibiotic thing. I've had a couple ear infections in the last couple years and I always get prescribed the 10-day antibiotic and you're not supposed to drink while taking it. I plan to use this excuse at Thanksgiving. :)

  • If your friends are anything like my friends Id suggest the beer bottle trick over antibiotics. It just takes the lying part out-which I suck at. Even have a half full glass of wine and make it look like you're sipping on it. :) enjoy the wedding!!
  • I wouldn't outright lie. It will make people suspicious. I would carry around a bottle that I don't drink. Or actually drink it, because I dumped out the beer and replaced it will something else.
  • I also have a just beer +wine wedding this weekend, the beer bottle trick could work but at some weddings they pour the beer for you into a glass. I was thinking of getting a glass of wine - not like holding it all night, but getting it from the bar (or have my husband get it when he orders his drink) then maybe have it for cocktail hour and put it down at my table. DH can sip it then if he wants, or I'll just let it sit. Much easier when it's a full bar and you can drink club soda concoctions that look like cocktails!
  • I've used the "I'm driving" reason too. At a wedding you could carry a drink and set it on a table to go dance and have your SO sip it for you. At least it's not a full bar where people will want you to join in shots! I've been to weddings like that. Luckily I was very pregnant so there was no need for excuses.

I will add that watered down apple juice looks a lot like white wine. I used that trick recently.

  • See if there was non alcoholic wine at the wedding. If it is a big enough bar their might be. I know at my wedding the beer and wine was free but they had other wine you could buy and there was a non alcoholic one.
  • Can you say it's a white wine spritzer but really just do seltzer? I recently went to a wedding and did the spritzer thing. I did get a glass of wine and pretended to drink it. I had my sister and H take sips (gulps) when no one was looking. Or the antibiotic thing. The bartenders will usually help you out if you give them a heads up!
  • Ahh, I'm facing the same problem!! I'd go with antibiotics, hungover from the night before, or just throw a couple limes in a sprite!
  • I went out with my friends and totally blew it. I arrived at the bar early and asked for mock cocktails, bartender was great. But then of course my friend wanted to try my cocktail to see if she should have the same one, she said it was gross. Then I had a fake mochcito, she tried that as well ! Then we went to a bar and someone ordered shots, I said thanks but I don't like shots. Then someone ordered a round of drinks for everyone. I got the cranberry vodka and kept spilling some out which was suspicious. Then I finally got an apple cider in a can which worked the best. No one saw what I was drinking and how much of it. What a disaster, I hate lying.
  • You could always say you have an ulcer or something? I'm bad at lying so I've just been telling my drinking buddies
  • I had this problem this past weekend at a small friend dinner party. I accepted a glass of wine and pretended to drink it. Left it on the table between my husband and I and he was taking sips for me so the glass was getting empty. No one noticed. (I hope) he ended up a little tipsy though!

This is my go-to as well. Because it's true anyway, and I am a terrible liar.

  • I'm going to say I'm on a liver cleanse. Obviously drinking is bad for your liver so you absolutely cannot do it while on the cleanse. I'm also going to say I started it now so I'll be able to drink by the holidays. And the cleanse would last about a month so you should be able to tell everyone by then!
  • I love the beer bottle trick,never fails! :)

I had the best time fake drinking with my first son. It was my bff's birthday, we got to the restaurants bar first and my husband told our waitress about the plan. The waitress loved it and improvised, she asked if I wanted another margarita in front of my friends, I said sure. She said should we make it a double? lol. Awesome night :)

  • Getting over a two day migraine and the medication should not be mixed with alcohol or it makes you sick. I used this and it worked like a charm!

  • Migraine meds as @jerseybroadwaybaby said. I would never drink with mine!

Don't know who said it but the beer bottle with water is a great idea too!
