Postpartum bleeding :(

I am four weeks PP and my bleeding essentially stopped about 1-2 weeks ago (I've been continuing to have some lightly colored discharge, but no blood). Today I went for a walk (which I've done before) and took a nap. When I woke up and used the bathroom I had bright red blood in my pad. The pad isn't soaked but it's enough to make me concerned. Has this happened to anyone else? I called my doctor and left a message but am just looking for some input as I wait to hear back.

I am breastfeeding and had a normal vaginal delivery with no complications (only needed a few stitches - two in the labia and one at the opening).

TIA

Re: Postpartum bleeding :(

  • I'm sorry because this isn't helpful but the same thing happened to me--all of a sudden, at 4 weeks PP, I have blood again and it's definitely red (it's really not a lot though). I hope someone can answer--let me know what you end up doing and I'll do the same.

  • Such a downer @CSchoFink.. I'll let you know what my doc says once I hear back.
  • This happened to me with both of my previous pregnancies. Each time was at 4 weeks. It then tapered off and same happened at 6 weeks. After that all bleeding stopped.

  • This happened to me too around the same time, but stopped again after a few days. I'm 6 weeks pp now and haven't had any bleeding since.
  • Thanks for responding @mmd091909 and @jen83mn - glad to know you're both okay despite this somewhat odd occurrence. Definitely sets my mind at ease!
  • I have had light bleeding since I had my LO (4 weeks ago) amd just the other night I passed a huge blood clot the size of a golf ball and a lot of bleeding. Scared the crap out of me but doc says it's all normal.
  • Thanks, all! Just FYI - Heard back from my doc and she is not concerned unless I have other symptoms such as fever, or heavier bleeding. She said to just keep an eye on it and try and take it easy for a few days.

    Thanks to everyone who responded!
  • Thanks for the info and for asking the question, @sokomo !
  • You're probably just overdoing it! When I did a little more than I was used to this happened to me. Rest more and it'll go away again.

Not to make others nervous but I have been bleeding since LO was born. I thought it was the result of a baby that needs to be bounced 24/7 and she being my third. Turns out I have retained a piece of placenta. I never had a fever or drenched through a pad in an hour, just persistent bright red bleeding. Tomorrow I have a D and C to have it removed. I made assumptions and never called my ob. Call if you are uncertain about your bleeding.

ETA: I am six weeks pp
  • Really good to know, @monicaP. Looks like my bleeding has stopped again but definitely important for ppl to know to keep an eye on it if they find themselves in the same situation.
  • Exact thing happened to me at 4 weeks & I had stopped bleeding at 2. My doc said that sometimes a scab can form where the placenta was attached in the uterus & the scab probably came off causing some bleeding. It stopped after about 2 days. I had ever so slightly cramping as well. They said just make sure you're not soaking a pad or have really bad cramps & should be ok:)
