Help with breast-feeding recipes!!!

So I guess I should consider myself lucky that I've always had a great metabolism, and now that I'm two weeks postpartum it's back. I'm also very lucky that my DS is a super feeder and has a wonderful latch. Unfortunately I'm feeling like my life force is literally being drained from me every time I feed because I'm not taking in nearly enough calories. So I'm hoping that some moms out there might have some recipe ideas for me. Something high calorie and super nutritious that will go easy on my postpartum digestive system. Ready. Set. Go.

Re: Help with breast-feeding recipes!!!

  • I'm a third time breastfeeding mom and I also have a fast metabolism. I love oatmeal! Something that I find delicious is mixing cooked oatmeal, flavored yogurt and peanut butter. It really tastes good! You could also get some protein powder and make some almond milk, peanut butter and banana shakes. Can you tell I like peanut butter too?! ;)

  • Ditto to oatmeal! I ate it every day once I went back to work and needed to keep my supply up pumping. It made a huge difference in my supply and kept me full. I've also pinned some lactation muffins, but haven't made any yet. I'm interested in other recipes as well!

  • What about a coconut milk smoothie with breakfast? Just add Greek yogurt and fruit. It's high in fat, calories, and protein.
  • Pinterest has some awesome lactation cookie recipes. Oats are the breastfeeding wonder food! Avocado is nutrient and calorie dense, and I love it with just some sea salt. Nut butters if you are not allergic.
  • 3 cups raw oats, 1 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup honey. Heat peanut butter & honey on the stove until mixed. Add to oats and place in glass 8"x8" dish. Set in refrigerator.

Protein, no bake, quick, filling, and great for your milk!!!

Oh my goodness! My mom and I made these the other day and they are amazing!!! We added Chai seeds and you talk about upping milk production!
  • @ameares721 : raw oats as in old-fashioned oats?
  • I have not breastfed since my first dd, 17 years ago, so I don't have any specific recommendations to breastfeeding.

But I'm a vegan marathon runner, so for years I've had to find ways to add calories & nutrition to my foods when I'm burning through them with my running/training.

I'm in the habit of adding plenty of peanut, almond or cashew butter to things (oatmeal, smoothies, toast, apple slices, bananas) or adding healthy fats like avocado to dinner foods. My salads always have lots of nuts & seeds on them. And I munch on trail mixes with nuts or granola with nuts throughout the day.

I'm thinking it'll be even more of a struggle while breastfeeding & training, so I'll have to be extra careful in my efforts.

Earlier in my pregnancy, when I was still running a lot, I resorted to drinking Orgain vegan protein shakes because I wasn't gaining much weight. More natural/pure than something like a Boost, but also more expensive. If I need to do that again, I will.

I imagine it will be a little easier for you if you're eating dairy & meat. I'd say just to make a conscious effort to add in some extra healthy calories to every meal you eat.
  • Smoothies are my go-to! I have pre-made baggies of frozen things that make it much easier. I either make banana, peanut butter, oats, and milk smoothies or strawberries, blueberries, banana, Greek yogurt, and spinach,
  • What about making an easy quiche, crust less quiche or pan of frittatta? Eggs, cheese, some spinach - bunch of calories but pretty good for you.
  • Overnight oats are so easy to throw together and "cook" overnight in the fridge! I mix different combos:

    Oats, almond milk, banana, PB
Oats, dairy, Nutella or cookie butter
    Oats, milk, cinnamon, banana
    Oats, milk, yogurt, berries

Also, carnation breakfast mix blended with almond milk and a banana is easy and so good!
  • Wow, the no bake cookies...Amazing!

So now just to throw a wrench in things, I'm allergic to avocado. And of course, when you say healthy fats the first thing people think of is avocado. Any ideas for other healthy fats and maybe some good lunch and dinner recipes?
(Also allergic to bananas, artichokes, and melons).

Yeah! I didn't use steel cut. Just plain rolled oats in the big canister!

Olive oil is a healthy fat! And a damn good one at that ;) I sometimes just coat pasta in olive oil with a pinch of salt and eat that. I like brown rice pasta with it. So sorry about your avocado allergy - that sounds awful :(

I know right... I'm allergic to all the yummy foods. The terrible part is that I didn't develop my allergies until I was 13, so I had plenty of time to make all of them my favorite foods. :-S
