Not showing....and concerned

Hey ladies hope all is well. I am 19 weeks and a few days and while my fiance and i can tell that i have gained about 10 pounds I still don't have the round belly yet. It is almost concerning especially when I'm constantly told i don't even look pregnant. I am definitely starting to notice I am getting more and more hungry throughout the day but my appetite is barely there. Its strange. I figure when this happens i should have a protein shake this way i know I am getting nutrients even tho I am not actually eating anything. When did everyone start to show with their first baby and is this normal? I was always a petite girl and only weighed 110 when i got pregnant. I am 5'5 and now weigh 121 at 19 weeks. I'm hoping you ladies can give me some comfort. Thank you!

Re: Not showing....and concerned

  • There are a ton of threads on this already - every week there is a HDBD thread which stands for hump day bump day. The women post belly shots and how far along they are.

I am a first time mom and started showing at 20 weeks. It happened practically overnight, and my outer stomach muscles felt quite sprained for 2-3 days. I understand this is quite normal for first time mom's - something about stomach muscles holding the uterus in (?)

  • Thank you. I apologize to everyone if this is a post that's constant. I can see that it would freak some out. And it is making me nervous. Thank you though!
  • It is pretty normal for a first time mom to not start showing until they're in the twenties weeks. Your abdominal muscles are still strong and have not been separated in a previous pregnancy. In future pregnancies you will show sooner, probably in the teens.

  • Not meaning to give you a hard time about your post, just meant to decode the HDBD.

I remember feeling incredibly unpregnant.... and now it is the opposite. LOL I am just hard to please, I suppose. :)
  • How do i delete I feel bad there are a lot of these threads

  • I'm in the exact same position as you. I'm 19 weeks and a few days and barely showing only enough for me and the hubby to notice. I'm 5'4" and was 110 pre pregnancy, so it sounds like our body frame is very similar! I have only gained about 6lbs so far but my OB said its nothing to worry about. I know it sucks cause I want that baby bump too but just give it a little longer and I think we will both be there! It definitely has helped reassure me when I started feeling her move around in my belly that everything is alright. Good luck!
  • Thanks girls I appreciate all the responses !!! Xoxo
  • Honestly I really only started to look pregnant around 22-24 weeks. I'm a ftm and its normal for reasons already posted above. It will happen overnight. Around 24 weeks I popped over a weekend. Even DH noticed the difference.
  • I had a similar body type and I didn't start really showing until around 23-24 weeks with my first pregnancy.

Also, if you haven't started already, take weekly bump pics. Sometimes you might not see the subtle differences because you live in your body 24/7, but it becomes more obvious when you can flip through pictures a week at a time.
  • I'm just over 12 weeks, and I look HUGE.  It's a lot of bloat, but I might as well have popped.  I was about your size before I got pregnant, just a little taller.  I read that showing can be dependent on how strong your core area is as well as your frame.  Maybe you have a strong core?  So it's probably nothing to worry about.

My co-worker is about 5-1/2 months pregnant, and you cannot tell unless she pulls her shirt flat over her tummy.  And even then it's barely a little bump.  She is also slender, but she has a good 5 inches on me.  Plus, she runs and works out.  I really think that is why she's not showing.

If I would've gotten pregnant last year back when I was still in an equestrian training program, I don't think I would have popped so soon, because my core was strong.  I had to quit because I got sick, then had my gallbladder out.  I'd been so sore, I didn't feel like riding. Then,I  got pregnant and now my MS is so bad I'd probably vomit while riding.

  • If your doctor is not concerned, you shouldn't be.

  • I started showing pretty much overnight too. Now I just feel huge. Also, watch what you are eating in those protein shakes. Sometimes they can be filled with a bunch of fake sugars and whatnot. Definitely have real food if you are hungry. :)
  • With my first it was somewhere in the early 20 weeks, maybe 22-23 weeks when I started really showing. And it happened overnight almost.

With my second about 16-18 weeks it went from beer belly to pregnant belly, and at 20 weeks now its pretty obviously a baby belly.

  • The day before I started labor and ~36 hours before DD was born a man in the elevator as I was leaving the hospital after an appointment *insisted* I was only 7 months along when I told him my due date was the following week. He went as far as to respond with "well, I wouldn't be surprised if they're wrong about that"

Looking back at pictures with DD I looked sort of like I'd gained a few pounds up through my 22 week photo and at 23 weeks it was entirely different. I had a round baby bump.

With this LO people keep saying stuff like "you don't look pregnant" but I'm smaller to start with and I have a retroverted uterus so I think that makes women show later.

I know it can be annoying & sometimes make you question you/your baby's health to get comments like that but if your doctor isn't worried you definitely don't need to be. (&+ hopefully it'll mean you get back to your regular jeans quicker - it took me 8 days after DD)

I didn't show to everyone else until around 25-28 weeks with my first viable pregnancy. Up until then everyone was asking me, "where is that baby?" . So I understand, but you have a ways to go and I promise by the end you will be wondering why you were concerned. If your doctor hasn't mentioned any concerns with development then I would just let it ride.
