Cell Free Fetal DNA Testing?

I have had friends get this test to determine the sex of their baby at 12 weeks! I would like to get it as well. But when I asked my doctor about it, he said that I should just wait until my 20 weeks ultrasound to find out the sex of my baby. He said there are no risks involved with it, just that he doesn't normally do it. Should I tell him that I want to get it done anyway? I know he can order it. Or should I just wait? Also, have any of you reached out to your insurance companies to see if they cover it???

Re: Cell Free Fetal DNA Testing?

  • Most insurance companies will not cover the test unless you are deemed high risk. If the only reason you're taking it is to find out the sex, just wait. The 7-8 week difference isn't that big of a deal and the test is expensive.

  • I just read about it in my info I got from the dr today. Same as PP.. My dr only offers it to high risk patients. I too would wait until 20 weeks. Does your dr offer a 3D/4D ultrasound package that allows you to find out gender at 15-18 weeks?

  • This is a medical test to screen for genetic issues with the child. It has the "benefit" of disclosing the sex of the child. It is for high risk women/couples.
