Hey so whats that second dark spot????

isn't that how it goes in the movies?

First let me say that twins do not run in my family anywhere. this will be a family first. Second, there goes my decision to give birth at a natural birthing center with only midwives. I was so excited this time to do things all natural, no sterile hospital setting. I did a tour and absolutely loved this place. They bake the moms fresh bread and support you with water births, and if the pain is too much they offer gas for some help. it was so perfect. each room had a beautiful chandelier and a big bed and comfy furniture for SO. It felt awesome.

Well today I went in for my first apt and because she couldn't find the heartbeat she did an ultrasound. She forwarned me that the only thing she was capable of doing was locating that there was a heartbeat and that if there was any problems I would have to wait for a different midwife that was certified for the ultrasounds to come in or be refered out. Well....she found the baby and there was a second dark spot under but we could see anything in it. she said nothing, SO said nothing so I asked. she said she wasn't sure. found the heartbeat of the one that was easy to see and after when she angled the wand different you could just barely make out a second white mass in the see of black, and right there in the middle was a little heart beating away.

I am so excited and so nervous. We were trying. I had just removed my mirena in July had one cyle and we were going to try for 2 cycles knowing it probably wouldn't happen (I have school and am premed so I was trying to figure out timing so I would deliver after my spring term. Now our shot in the dark turned into two healthy thumping hearts growing in my belly. explains why my symptoms have been so terrible and I have been so tired.

  • Congratulations!! Sorry you won't be able to deliver where you wanted, but how exciting to have twins!

  • Congrats! That's awesome!
  • Congrats!! I was also surprised to see twins at my scan (which my midwife did just because I had been having some minimal spotting). Can you find a caring midwife at a hospital? I'm sure there are fabulous, caring OB's out there as well but I have just loved my two midwives for my first two babies. Just because you may have to deliver in a hospital I wouldn't rule out the possibility of going med-free. It's probably not going to have the same vibe of course, but maybe there's a middle-ground.
Us mommas are amazing - you will figure out how to juggle school and the babies I'm sure. :)

Frequently, midwives aren't allowed to be the primary care providers for twin pregnancies, because many consider twins to de facto not be "low risk". :\ It'll depend on the laws and regulations in OP's area.

OP, congrats and good luck! :D

  • I was refered to a place that's a little farther but the midwives at my group love them and refer all high risk pregnancies to them. im hopeful. I also have a meet and great apt today with an OB who had twins during her residency and obviously followed on to be a doctor. very inspirational. She is newer to the clinic so she has lots of open apts.
  • My cousin has her twins with a midwife at a birthing center, but I know different states have different laws, and Texas is pretty chill, from what I understand.

I feel for you as that place sounds amazing, home made bread and all.

It is kind of a let down this might not be the birth you originally wanted.
I didn't get the experience I wanted first time around either due to a serious medical issue but a healthy baby really made it worth it to me and I ended up very happy in he end. I focused on healthy and full term during the pregnancy as my main goals and being thankful for that. Nothing can beat the end goal of a healthy baby. Well, maybe two healthy babies ;)

    Congrats!
Also I personally know of someone that had her twins all natural. They are now 1 year old. So I also want to agree with the other posters, don't count yourself out just yet! There may be a way just yet.

You still may be able to birth at the birthing centre! You may be able to find an OB that works in conjunction with the birthing centre but monitors you in the case of issues (such as babies not being in the right position or pre term labour). So you end up essentially doing both.
