Umbilical Hernia

Hi moms So I found out my baby has an umbilical hernia. His pediatrician says it's common to appear a few months after birth. She says she wants to watch it for a little while to see if it will go away in it's own but if it doesn't then he will have to undergo surgery. I'm kinda freaking out inside & hopeing it goes away on it's own. Have any of you moms gone through this? How did you cope if your Baby did have surgery.

I found out the exact same thing last week at our two month app. My pediatrician told us that 98% of the time they go away by age one. It is important that when my LO cries that we push it back in to make sure that her intestines aren't getting caught in there. Not every time she cries - just every so often to check it. He said as long as they don't mind you pushing it back in (which freaks me out) then it is fine. Fingers crossed that our babies will not need surgery :)

Our baby got one at about 1 month old. The Dr said the same that it'll more than likely go away on its own and as long as you can push it in then its not a big deal. If it gets to where you can't push it in then that may require surgery. She's 3 months now and its already gone down a lot!

My son had one and it went away around 6 months. My daughter also has one now as well. Hers is a lot smaller than my sons. The dr told is it is very rare to have surgery

We're getting ready for my daughter's surgical consultation right now for her hernia. She's had it since 6 weeks. She's now 16 weeks today. They probably won't do surgery, but her pedi doesn't like how it's changed colors. She gets really upset if her pants or diaper press down on it, but she's fine if I press it back in myself. It's always soft every time which is a good thing.

My lo doesn't have an umbilical hernia, but I had one that was never fixed. It was very small and never caused a problem until about 2 years ago when my intestines poked through it just enough to strangulate. I couldn't even see it, but I had the most horrible stomach pain I've ever had and they found it during my ct scan in the emergency room. I had to have it repaired.

My daughter had one when she was born. The specialist I saw said he hadn't preformed surgery to fix one on a child under 5 in years because they usually close on their own by then. Her's closed by about age 2. Until then we just had to monitor for changes or pain.
