2nd Trimester

Water birth

This is going to be my first birth center delivery and a water birth is an option for me. I've already been planning on laboring in the tub, as I find baths very soothing, but I never seriously considered a water birth until now. For those of you who've had a water birth, what do you see as the pros and cons?

Re: Water birth

  • This is my first pregnancy as well, but I have a friend who had both her children at a birthing center. She raved about it and said she would recommend it to anyone. She said it is much more calm and soothing, the atmosphere is relaxed and dimly lit, and there isn't the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital.
Other than it being somewhat 'untraditional' I don't see anything wrong with it!

Yes, sorry that wasn't clear. I'm talking about water birth as well.

  • A few hospitals where I live used to offer water births. They're stopping now because there's a higher risk of a bacterial infection. So now they only allow being in the tub before your water breaks. I was super bummed finding this out as I hoped to have one at my hospital. On the other hand there are women who have AMAZING water births and don't get infections. I can't remember if the infection is only for mom or if it passes to the baby as well. Something to ask your midwife (i'm assuming) or doc. before making your decision.

  • Thanks ladies!! I have a birth class this weekend so I'll be sure to ask about infection risks.
  • I'm having a home water birth and I wouldn't have it any other way. It reduces the risk of tearing, stress on the mother and baby, pain of labor, etc. Additionally, if you are GBS positive, you are less likely to pass it on to your baby because of the dilution of the bacteria in the water. It's washed out of your vagina, basically.
  • They should stop doing so many cervical checks if they are so worried about infection...'
