2nd Trimester

Weaning while pregnant...

Anyone have any tips? May be a stupid question, but will this effect my supply with the new little one?

Re: Weaning while pregnant...

  • Not much tips on weaning because I'm not having much success doing it right now myself. But it won't affect supply with the new one, which is why tandem nursing exists lol. :-)

  • Older children are also great at helping you boost your supply with a nb. Just nurse them after your infant. They can drain the breast more efficiently and it signals your body to make more milk faster.
  • I just weaned 18 month old last week and I am about 16 weeks pregnant. You will likely find a change in the composition and quantity of your milk near the end of the first trimester and or beginning of 2nd trimester. I had this happen in both of my pregnancies while I was breastfeeding. Both of my babies showed an interest in weaning around that time and it wasn't too much of a struggle to wean them since they weren't getting much milk at that time anyway. (Two different pregnancies, two different kids). If you do push through, your milk will return but it will be the right consistency for a newborn, not your older baby. You can still nurse the older baby but the milk will be suitable to the newborns needs.

  • it wont affect your supply but you need to make sure you feed the new born first. some kids self wean cause of the taste of the milk (it turns into salty colostrum at around week 16.

Won't affect your supply. My older nursling definitely helped boost my supply with my last baby. How old is your current nursling? I just weaned my 4yo pretty easily (just kept putting her off) – she nursed thru #3's pregnancy, but my 19mo will likely be tandeming with the newbaby (I'm 18w), although I'd be thrilled if he night weaned. I'm just glad I won't be nursing three haha!
If you google "jay Gordon night weaning" he has some excellent tips!
