VBAC?

Has anyone had a successful VBAC? If so was there anything you felt was important asking your provider?

My dream was to VBAC at a local birthing center but state laws don't allow it. I'm meeting with a nurse midwife and am wondering what I should ask her to be successful as possible.

Re: VBAC?

  • I would consider it, though my c-section with DD was a breeze so I am very tempted to just schedule this one as well. I will talk with my OB when we get closer to see what he recommends.

  • I'm hoping for a VBAC! My SIL had one a few years ago. As long as you talk to your midwife about your desires, I'd be shocked if she wasn't on the same page as you. I'm switching to a midwife to increase my chances of a VBAC. Good luck to you!!

I had a successful VBAC with my dd-at home. To me having a midwife was key. She was incredibly supportive and I never once doubted my choice. Granted I live in Canada and laws are different around here. Women are encouraged to use birth centres instead of taking up a hospital bed (for low risk pregnancies only. FYI).

In terms of preparing, the midwives encouraged me to go drug free as epidurals can increase the chance of a repeat c-section. I also recommend taking a good pre-natal course that focuses on natural birth. I found it helped much more than my first prenatal class offered by the public health unit. Even if you opt for an epi - the "natural" type course gives you a better education, IMO. And finally I strongly recommend getting a doula. The extra support is really really great. I couldnt have done it without my doula. Ok, I could gab forever about VBACs but pm me if you want to chat more :)

    Edit: grammar
  • As a birth doula I tell clients attempting VBAC to find a local ICAN chapter of there is one.

    Read this: https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ClickedLink=293&ck=10212&area=27

    And hire a doula.

  • Following this thread... I am also planning a VBAC, med-free and at the hospital.
  • My hospital doesn't allow VBAC's! considering a different hospital so I can have one.

  • Hoping for one.  When I first met my OB/GYN a few years ago, he was perfectly fine with it, and my hospital does them.  I'm a pretty good candidate as my first was vaginal, my second a c/s.  So, I've got a "proven pelvis" as it were.  Fingers crossed!  Especially since we might go for one more (assuming all goes well)...
  • I had a vbac. My OB actually said "the way I cut you will allow you to have a vbac" as she was stiching me up from my dd1's c section lol....too soon lady
Any way...I had a wonderful unmedicated vbac and I hope to do the same this time! I would shop around for a doctor that is supportive of your choice. Most new research says there is not as much risk involved as originally thought.
But....keep in mind...getting a healthy baby out safely is most important. My stubborn SIL insisted on having a vbac even after she had symptoms of pre-e. She ended up having seizures and the baby almost died.
  • I had a successful un-medicated VBAC in September 14. I feel like having a doctor that is truly supportive of them is key. I actually delivered (will again) at a hospital that's over 100 miles away so I would have a great doctor. It was so worth it.
