HELP! Fresh vs Frozen sperm

My husband and I are currently undergoing IUI cycles. The plan was to continue using fresh sperm collected from my husband the day of the IUI. However the military has thrown a small wrench in that plan. It appears my husband will be going on deployment and neither one of us wants this to delay our family plans. Does anyone know the success rate difference, if any, between using fresh vs. frozen sperm? We have some time to bank before he leaves I just want to make sure that this change is not going to be a big problem. Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: HELP! Fresh vs Frozen sperm

  • There was a lady on the September IUI board I was on who got a BFP using frozen sperm. :) I think it was her first IUI too. I don't personally have any experience.

  • I don't think there is a difference for fresh vs frozen, but I would ask your RE since maybe it varies from clinic to clinic, patient to patient...

  • My RE said that sperm are very resilient and there is really no difference in using fresh or frozen. We chose to freeze because it was just easier.

  • My husband travels for work so we have to freeze most cycles. Haven't gotten a BFP yet but my RE said freezing is fine.
      • TTC #1 since August 2014
      • currently on 5th medicated IUI cycle
  • Woo hoo! That was the answer I was hoping for! Thanks ladies!
  • My husband and I have used both fresh and frozen - the downside with freezing is you lose some when freezing and then again when thawing. This was a big deal to us as he has extremely small samples as it is so we couldn't really afford to lose any. Good luck!
  • We used frozen sperm for my IVF because my husband needed a PESA. We got pregnant but lost almost all our embryos minus 3 (started with 28) by day three when the sperm takes over. So idk if it was because the sperm was frozen or other cause. When I was researching it online, everything says it works just as well.
  • I have had bfns with both fresh and frozen so I really don't think it matters unless your partner has a low count. The only thing that matters is the timing of those little swimmers.
      • TTC #1 since August 2014
      • currently on 5th medicated IUI cycle
  • We are lucky to not have any male factor issues. His sperm analysis went great! I will definitely be discussing our options at an upcoming visit but I appreciate getting your feedback while waiting to see the doctor.

My husband and I have used both. Two IUIs back to back. First, frozen 4 million sperm and second, fresh 10 million sperm. Doctor says the success rate is the same!!
  • Our first IUI is this month and we will be doing fresh. Hopefully we have success and we won't have to worry about using frozen moving forward once DH leaves. But it is definitely good to know that frozen is an option. We have just come so far on this 2 year TTC journey and we don't want to take a break. Our age seems like the only thing we have on our side and we don't want to give up a whole year.
  • As I understand it, some sperm doesn't survive, and the sperm that does has a shorter life span.  But the impact on success rates isn't large.  Then again (IUI veteran here) IUI success rates are not that high to start with.  They work, but not for everybody, and it make take a few tries.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

My clinic does a cleansing of the sperm, fresh and frozen, to remove any poor performers and only inject the ones with the highest motility. @PCOSat25 fx for you!
