TTC, have had trouble with OPK! Please help!

Ok, so in August, I had a tubal reversal done. I'm 36. I had my first period Sept 21 after the surgery, and now we r actively TTC. I started OPK at 10 days after the first day of my period. The brand I got was first response because I wanted accuracy and I didn't trust the store brands. Every time I tested, I got a negative. Either there was 2 lines and the test line was lighter or there was no test line at all. I was getting very frustrated, thinking maybe I wasn't going to ovulate this month. So I had one first response test left, and I had left it at home when it was time to test. So, I stopped at Walgreens and got the strip tests (the store brand this time). I got a positive for LH surge!!! When I got home, I used the first response just to make sure it was accurate and it was negative! So then a little later, I tested with the store brand test strips again and got another positive. We went ahead and DTD just in case the positive was correct. I'm praying that the positive was correct and I will b ovulating within the next 24 hours. Has anyone else had this issue with OPK?????

  • The store brand can be very sensitive.  I stopped using them because they register a positive if you use FSH injections, which I do.

You may have several small LH surges in a month.  It's only *the* LH surge if you ovulate afterwards, which you can tell (in retrospect) by temping.  You may have to temp and use OPKs for a few months to really start seeing a pattern.

Also, you may need to use OPKs a couple times a day to catch a really big LH surge.  I get a lot of "sort of" positives, but only one really super dark line absolutely positive.  It might happen at night, or it might happen in the morning.  It doesn't show up for both tests, though.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • Thanks. This is all so confusing for me. I have 3 children... It's never ever been hard for me to get pg. hopefully I was ovulating and it happened.
  • I use those same store brand strips and never have issues. Sometimes it's hard to determine whether the test line is actually darker than the control. Do you temp? They will confirm O. Remember that pos OPK means you will O within 12 to up to 36 hours!

Well I was going on whether they were the same color or the test line was darker. Does the test line have to be darker to be positive??? It was a little darker last night (the 3rd one I took) Maybe I will O today!! We have DTD every day so I really think my bases are covered anyway LOL
I have never done BBT, I need to get a thermometer so I can.
  • @agillespie15 the test line should be as dark or darker than the control. BBT is interesting because it confirms ovulation and post o temps. It's mind of addicting LOL
