  • Possible they may need a little bit of NICU time, but they should be fine! I would read the Multiples board here on TB. :)

  • My twin boys were born last week at 35w6d as I spontaneously went into labor. They have both been in NICU since birth (8 days ago). Hudson originally had difficulty breathing & needed a dose of surfactant, along with CPAP for a day. He was then weaned to oxygen & had a feeding tube in his nose as his respiratory rate was too high to safely orally feed. Since his respiration status is better, he was taken off oxygen & started on oral feeds, which he has been taking like a champ! He is doing wonderfully & will be coming home tomorrow, for a total of 9 days in NICU.
His brother, Conrad, is doing well but isn't feeding the greatest. He didn't have to same respiratory issues as Hudson and was originally with me on the postpartum unit but wasn't eating enough. He will be in NICU a bit longer in order to get him to tolerate oral feeds. I have been reassured that these issues are completely normal for their gestation & they will grow out of it.
Bottom line--don't be surprised if they do end up with some NICU time. It's definitely hard & it's even harder to leave without them but I have tried to take advantage of being able to rest & heal from my c section without two newborns at home right away.

  • I had my twins at 36w4d and neither had to go to the NICU. I did have the steroid shots so I'm sure that helped. Baby A was 5lb and Baby B was 4, so even though they were a little small we were cleared to go home. You never know what's going to happen when they come out so try not to worry too much! 36 weeks is great and I'm sure you'll do fine regardless. Advice--sleep now!! All day long! Feeding twins is a round the clock endeavor :)
  • I had my twin boys at 34 weeks 5 days because they were measuring a pound or so different therefore the doctors were concerned they had twin to twin transfusion. They were 3 pounds 11 oz and 3 pounds 13 oz. They had breathing issues so had to go to the NICU and stayed in there for a little over a month. Now they are completely healthy (still tiny) 2 1/2 year olds!

Having babies in the NICU is tough but like pp said recovering from the c-section was easier with them there. Our NICU nurses and doctors were absolutely wonderful; don't be afraid to lean on them for support and ask questions if you have them! Good luck and congratulations on your two blessings! Best of luck!!!
  • I had my twin boys at 35wks5days. They were both over 5 lbs and needed no NICU time. I had the steroid shots, so that helped I think. Stay positive! Twins are such a blessing and are so much fun!
I'm expecting a little brother for them in 3 weeks and I am so excited to see how things differ from having twins to just one newborn!
