Returning to work... Advice

So I need to talk to my boss tomorrow about my work schedule when I return to work in a few weeks. I don't want to work full time (40 hours a week) but I know that's what he will want me to do. Before my leave I was working 36 hours a week. Anyone have any advice on how to successfully negotiate fewer work hours? I'm dreading this conversation, I'm afraid I won't get what I want.

Re: Returning to work... Advice

  • Is it an option to quit 100%? I say that just so you have some leverage when it comes to negotiating - not to threaten him but tell him what you desire and are willing to work and if he can't accommodate that, then you're sorry but you will no longer work. I think whatever you decide, being upfront, firm but polite and respectful is key!

  • If push came to shove. But I really love my job. Took me a long time to find a job I love.
  • I can't negotiate hours but I am in the middle of trying to negotiate my WFH and location (stupid exec changed my departments arrangement and takes effect when I come back). I'd honestly go in directly with what you want. Have the schedule written out and just be matter of fact about it. Explain that you need to have a good work and home balance and this number of hours allows you to perform at your best the entire time. Then explain as the baby gets older, you'll be able to expand your availability.
