Heels while pregnant

It's started getting pretty chilly here and so today I wore a pair of heeled boots with my dress. I normally wear a lot of heels, especially in cooler weather so I didn't think anything of it. The number of people at work that have told me I shouldn't be wearing heels while pregnant was pretty surprising. Is that a thing? I've never heard that rule before. I was just starting to get used to the constant comments about the size of my stomach, not sure I'm ready critiques on my footwear choices as well!

Re: Heels while pregnant

  • They say it's a no-no because your center of gravity shifts and makes you wobblier than normal. The increase of injury by wearing heels increases while pregnant, but it's not a rule I'm sticking to.

Meh, I still wear heels every now and then.  As long as you aren't uncomfortable or feel like your balance is off I'm sure you will be fine.

  • I'm still wearing heels. Definitely not my sky-high ones, but my more modest pumps and heeled boots. If you feel off-balance, don't wear them. If you feel steady, I say go for it!

I've been getting that a lot too. But I've also received comments from people that they could never walk in heels like I do. So I agree with PPs- if you normally walk like a newborn baby deer in heels, pregnancy is the wrong time to wear them. But if you're used to it and feel comfortable and in control, keep rocking them!

I personally enjoy heeled boots even more so than pumps, feels sturdier. I still drive in flats and change into heels at the office/when I get to my destination though, and I plan to do the same when the weather gets bad- winter boots for anything outside or driving, heels inside.

  • I still wear a sturdy, well-heeled shoe but no stilettos, and no wedges. I've been wearing heels forever, and could probably compete a triathlon in heels if I was forced. People need to mind their business.
  • Heels can contribute to hip and back pain, especially in pregnancy because they force you to arch your back unnaturally. In pregnancy, your back arches automatically and the heels make it worse. You want to tuck your pelvis instead of pushing it out to help with sciatic and back pain. If that's not an issue for you, wear away.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm sticking to the chunky, not super high heels. I haven't had any balance problems with pregnancy yet, and the heels don't seem to be causing any so far. Obviously, if I felt wobbly I wouldn't wear them, but that seems like common sense whether or not you're pregnant. I was just surprised but the number of people that were horrified by my choice in shoes.
  • I guess more power to you? I wore a pair of boots the other day that I normally consider basically flat (they just have that tiny like 1" heel that MOST boots have on the back, not a "heel" heel, just a flat boot heel, ya know?) and my foot has been killing me for DAYS after where the heel meets the rest of the shoe, which has NEVER happened before with these shoes. I know I'm not normally a heels girl (I find them painful and I'm tall enough that honestly I don't see the point in the pain, I wear heels like twice a year to weddings only), but these shoes should NOT have hurt, it was definitely a since-pregnancy thing!

  • I wore heels and heeled boots when I was pregnant with ds, up until the day before I was admitted to the hospital actually. As pp said, balance issues due to your changing center of gravity and increased back/ hip pain are big reasons they say not to wear heels while pregnant. I think there's an old wives tale regarding this as well, not sure though. Listen to your body. If you start to notice back and hip pain increase you might want to wear them less frequently. Also be careful about wearing them in the snow and ice, if you get thay kind of weather. I was so nervous about slipping! As long as you're comfortable go ahead and wear them.
  • I wore heels to a wedding and I'm normally fine, I could only wear them a few hours before I was in agony. But my opinion is try it for yourself but bring some flats just incase you end up looking like Kim Kardashian (as I did ) from the fluid!
  • I've had people make comments too. I try to stick to conservative heels while pregnant to avoid falls. I've been wearing wedges all summer and tried some heeled boots on Sunday. Ugh I felt so off balance and almost dizzy, and they weren't even that high! I was so bummed. Guess I'll have to talk hubby into letting me buy new boots for this year with no heel. What a shame, having to go boot shopping ;-)

  • I am still wearing wedges, and will continue to as long as I feel comfortable. I hate other people's opinions!
