Trying to Get Pregnant

Never get a positive on an OPK Test

Hi ladies!

I was on the pill for 12 years and just got off 4 months ago. So it has been 4 months that DH and I have been TTC our first child. Since getting off the pill my cycles have been regular every 27-28 days. I have had every indicator that I am ovulating. CM is where it should be, BBT shows slight fluctuation and I do get frisky around that time, but the OPK test has never shown a positive in 4 months. I test in the morning when I wake up and in the evening when I get home from work. Should I be testing in the afternoons as well? Have any other ladies had these issues with OPK test?

You could be missing your surge. I rarely get a true positive on an OPK. Many women here recommend testing using second morning urine.

  • I have never gotten any inkling of a line (not a positive, but NO LINE at all).  Multiple brands and multiple times during the day.  I show a clear temp shift.

If you are super hydrated, your pee may also be too diluted to pick it up.
  • Not every women will turn a OPK positive. I have also heard that the best time to test is in between 10am and 2pm and to never use your FMU. But if you are temping, checking CM and CP, and your cycles are pretty regular then you should know the day, plus or minus one, when you are Oing. It can take a healthy couple up to a year to get pregnant. Just keep HIO and FXed that your stay here is short.

  • I had no luck with regular opks - maybe i was doing it wrong. I have irregular cycles and dont have enough temping data to go off, so this month i got the advanced digital opks and that worked for me (it was my very first time seeing a positive opk this morning :D). If you're temping and you know you ovulate then maybe you're just missing the surge like PP said?

  • Thanks ladies. I know its early in the game, so I am not stressing too much. Just trying to figure my body out after being on the pill for so long. Just want to make sure that I am actually ovulating! I might get a very faint line on an OPK but that could be anything. Very frustrating.

OPKs don't confirm that you are ovulating, they just pick up the LH surge that usually (but not always) precedes O. The only way to confirm O is by temping.
  • OP you are doing the best thing to confirm O which is temping:) like PP have said the OPKS are a secondary way to track O and don't actually confirm it. Someone help me out on this though, I know there is an OPK test that attunes itself to your body and detects surges based on your normal LH level vs a rise. What brand is that again?
  • I had the strongest OPK off of 8:30 am pee. The night before it was strong but not as strong as the control, the same afternoon (1:30-ish) it was back to how it was the previous evening. A faint line is normal all the time, it just reflects the basal levels of LH that may be in your system, I always had a faint line.
  • I usually get the strongest OPK off a late afternoon pee (4:30-5:00).  Some people never get a positive OPK though.
  • I had one last night at 6 pm. Take a cycle and test a whole bunch so you can figure it out.
  • I've only used clearblue advanced and I've always had a "peak" but it hasn't always been in line with my temperature shift. Although they're a lot more expensive, they seem easier than the wondfos.
  • I never had luck with the OPKs that used two lines, never turned one positive. I've gotten high and peak readings with clear blue advanced OPKs but it's a couple days off when comparing it with my temps, tends to show a peak 3-4 days before my temp shift. I do find it helpful in narrowing it down but they're better to use along with temping from my experience.

I started seeing an RE in August, and he told me that OPK only "work" for 25% of women. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I guess he was suggesting that there are a lot of variables involved, so they are far from definitive. Temping has definitely made me feel more confident that ovulation is occurring. *Edited because my eyes are tired, and I made no sense the first time. : )
  • I use clearblue digital with FMU everyday, but I bought a whole bunch of Wondfo's and test afternoon and night as well.

I temp and check CM to get a better picture, but it gives me more confidence using two different types of OPKs to make sure I hit my FW.

  • Thank you everyone for the advice. I have been using the Wondfo brand which I read good reviews on, but it's not working for me. I just want to understand my body more. Have been on BC since 17, just got off when I turned 30. Had irregular cycles prior, so I really have no idea what my body can do and what it feels like. It had been a fun 4 months....getting off BC has been awful!
  • I get a clear positive but it can be any time of day or night.  Sometimes I will get a positive with fmu and sometimes it will be at 10 p.m. at night.  I have a ton of Wondfos and use them from cycle day 9 forward.  As soon as I see a fade in pattern - many people won't get this, I start testing with my clearblue easy digital ovulation kit to confirm.  I've started to become really good about knowing when it's going to happen by checking cp and cm.  I planned to start temping this month but haven't done so yet as my puppy at my Mabis a few days in.  I have a new one now so I'll be able to confirm O next month.

As PP suggested, definitely try testing at different points during the day.  Last month, I tested at 6 p.m. negative, 10 p.m. positive, 7 a.m. the next morning positive, and then 11 a.m. negative.  It was a short surge and I would have completely missed it if I hadn't been so diligent by testing.  Best of luck to you!
  • I was on bc the same amount of years as you and, like you, it has been a very tough transition for my body! I usually test on opks when I get home from work around 7:30 pm and get the results. My lines are fainter in the morning but everyone is different! Good luck!
  • I never did get a positive OPK either and all other symptoms did point to ovulation though. Got my BFP that cycle and now 6wks 3days along. I think the daily timing of the OPK can allow for variance. Keep BD'ing and hang in there!
  • They say testing in the middle of the day is best for OPKs (which is different from pregnancy tests).  Good luck!!

Are you using an application like fertility friend? I'm just wondering if your temperatures are reflecting ovulation or not? I also use Wondfo OPKs but have a hard time getting a clear positive on them… What I usually do is once I start to see the second line appear stronger, I switched to the clear blue digital and have had very good luck that way. That way I'm not spending a fortune on OPK's but I'm not missing positives either.
